...and the first two things I've tried to do, namely sort bookmarks alphabetically and open my home page in a new tab by default, do not seem to be possible without hunting for and downloading various community-developed plugins. Opening a new tab forces me onto the new tab page, including adverts to the Google Chrome web store...?! Is it too much to ask that a new tab opens my home page and nothing else?

Am I missing something, or are two such basic functions really missing from Google Chrome?

Edit - also, the autoscroll using the middle mouse button is extremely slow.

All that said it, certainly seems quite snappy when loading pages.

PS No fanboy rants please mrk :D.

Already looked at that, didn't help. It only changes what happens when you load the browser or select the home button, not what happens when you open a new tab. This is what my options look like:

I'll try those two downloads mentioned above and see what happens!

I just checked it actually, Sorry about that I thought it worked. I don't use a homepage so never checked it before :)

For bookmarks, right click on the bookmark area, the drop down menu should show 'bookmark manager' using that, under the Organize menu, you have an option called 'reorder by title' which will sort them alphabetically!

For slightly more familiar users, "Enable syncing of search engines" is now available in about:flags :D

Everything synced now! I imagine it will become standard in Chrome 16.

Blow me down, I looked in that menu and didn't see that. Thank you very much.

No problem, I just thought it had to be a feature so had a quick fiddle! I never needed to organise them but now I know how just in case :P

What does that mean exactly?

I use BOTH browsers in their latest nightly versions on and off as my primary browsers and when I post about either I post about their positives and negatives.

They have version 16 out HERE for Chrome, and version 8 HERE for FireFox. No hanging around for either of them.

Well I've installed the following plugins:

- Custom new tab
- Image Properties Context Menu
- imgur

...and am extremely happy with how Google Chrome operates! I was slightly put off by the concept of installing plugins, fearing that they'd be akin to the dreaded 'toolbars' in IE...however, they're silent and invisible, yet very effective. Right click now gives the option of image properties, and a new tab now opens on Google instead of frequently visited web pages.

I still think that this functionality should be built into Chrome from the off, however the imgur rehost plugin has gone some way to making me forget these shortcomings.

Have you been using IE all this time or something then?

Plugins are the sole reason many people use Chrome or FF, they do things no other browser allows and improves the web surfing experience to no end.

For me FF is my go to browser when I'm not in a Chrome mood. Mainly because the ReHost extension is so good, it allows you to right click any image on a site and then host it to your FTP or another image host AND it then copies the HTTP URL into your clipboard so you can then paste it into a forum post or whatever. But the fun doesn't end there! There's also a forum extension called BBCode which has many right click posting tags that you'd normally have to either manually type in or use the post edit box on forums, you can post youtube videos, code, quotes etc and it's all GUI driven so makes posting on forums much nicer especially when coupled with Rehost.

Chrome has similar extensions but they're not as well specced only offering the basic functionality.

I only wish Chrome allowed you to move toolbars and buttons around like you can in FF and quite why Google STILL have not allowed the use of separators in the bookmark manager I have no idea as that's mighty annoying.

Some more nice extensions for you then:

- Adblock Plus for Chrome
- LastPass
- Search by Image by Google (sort of like a right click TinEye)
- YT Background Search (searches youtube videos in a split pane so you can watch and browse at same time)

These and imgur which you already have are ones I couldn't be without anymore.

Latest problem...Barclays Business Internet Banking doesn't load in Chrome. This time I apparently need to install...an IE plugin! LOL!

When I press 'install plugin', nothing happens.
