Hi, I've just upgraded my system on a budget and am now running:

A64 4000+
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D
2GB Geil RAM
X1900XT 512mb
X-Fi XtremeMusic

Now the X-Fi has been giving me a hell of a time and its got to the point where I need to perform a fresh install of the OS (32-bit XP Pro). So I've been thinking of upgrading to either Windows XP x64 or Vista x32/x64.

Would my system be able to handle Vista and which would be the best option for gaming/compatibility?

Cheers.

There use tpo be problem with xfi drivers. But I have no idea what they like now.

If you get vista get 64bit. No point getting 32bit. Also vista is great a lot better than xp and faster as an OS. Games will drop fps in games by 0-5fps. But who can notice that..
So in other words just wait for someone to clarify xfi drivers then get vista 64.

Can I have the same drugs that you are taking? ;)

Vista is a buggy pile of horse poo. XP is far better apart from its lack of DX10 support.

The king of OSes is, of course, OS X :p

Another vote for Vista x64 which I prefer over my old XP PC,as to being buggy well not had any problems with my 47 working games that are installed(in Vista x64).

I guess you forgot to say how buggy XP was before SP1 and not very good until SP2,so if you go by track record Vista is already ahead ;).

Thanks for the opinions, I may stick with XP for a little while longer.

Is XP still ahead in games performance? And if so do you think Vista will overtake it soon?

I'm pretty sure the xfi drivers have been sorted. But I don't have one so don't want to say. Fire wizzard or someone else should be able to confirm.

Vista is only a few fps slower than xp. Which you won't be ale to notice.

There really is little point staying with xp. You might as well just get vista 64

i'd stick with xp

vista runs a hell of a lot better with dual core

(or get a dualcore cpu, they don't cost too much , around £35 i think for a dual core 939)

I've had no issues with my X-Fi XtremeMusic since the latest drivers were relased on the 5th of november I think it was. Before I had crackling when i was in games etc but now it's flawless. I'm also using Windows Vista HP 64

Another vote for Vista here. I still dual boot Vista x64/XP but 99% of the time I use Vista, I only ever use XP for certian things that are incompatible with Vista.

I will say this though, 4gb makes a huge difference to Vista. I find it boots quicker, and is generally quicker and smoother all round than with 2gb.
