Just upgraded to 4GB and Task Manager does not pick it all up

Hey guys

Just got myself another two sticks of Geil 2GB PC2-6400 ram so I now have 4 x 1GB sticks in the machine.

After fiddling with the bios a little (upping the voltage, adjusting timings), it went into Vista (64-bit) after a short moment of nothing. I'm running fine now however, I have noticed that while the bios reports the 4GB along with going into the 'Computer' bit of vista, Task manager is still only picking up 2GB of total memory. Doesn't seem right to me.

Just for you info, running a P5KC board.

cpu-z picks up all four 1GB modules. Last time i checked, i'm running the latest but one bios (0903).

EDIT: I upped the voltage on the ram, however, I left the Southbridge voltage at Auto.

UPDATE: Have just physically been taking out one of the two ram sticks as well as testing out the slots in the motherboard. Still have the problem. I'll be trying a bios update next.

UPDATE 2: Updated bios, still the same.

That's the only thing I could suggest sorry! All I had to do was enable the remap feature on my ASUS board and it worked!

Have you tried each stick on it's own to see if it registers 1GB for each. Just trying to rule out the possibility of a dodgey stick!

haven't tried each stick induvidually. Ok, I won't do that, but instead, i'll take out my old sticks that i know are good and boot up with the two new sticks, either one at a time or at the same time.

UPDATE: Tried the new ram sticks, one at a time. One booted into vista, and the other just kept on bringing up a BSOD with a message that included a memory error i think. Also, when it got past that it said it was loading files onto the hard drive.

Am now running 3GB, however, task manager still likes it's 2GB.

hmm, scrape that, just tried it again and each stick booted into vista this time. I'm very confused as i'm sure you lot are! I'll keep on researching into it to see if i can come up with anything.

Well, I figured out the problem, was my doing in the end :(.

Had fiddled around with the boot-up options under msconfig. That was checking the box to make sure my four cores were used as well as checking the memory to make sure all my memory was used.

Well, when putting in the new ram I thought (as well as forgot about this) that that memory bit would expand due to putting in more memory. I was of course horribly wrong.

So, after realising this, un-checking the box and restarting I am now allowing it to use the full 4GB.

So, it's all good now :D, just gotta remember user error next time instead of thinking it as a hardware problem!

Thanks for all your suggestions and support guys.

ahhh

glad it's sorted

you can untick the HAL option once it's been detected properly, so can untick all things you've done on that page

do that, reboot then check task manager for 4gb ram and for 4x cores :)

I'm leaving that memory option untouched now as it had caused more trouble than wanted. Still got the cpu box ticked.

Only problem now that I have discovered is that my updating of the bois to 1001 may not have been a bright idea as people are saying it's not actually for the P5KC, but rather the P5K.

Have looked at the many ways to go back to the old bios and tried the options with not much luck. However, everything is stable and faster with the bios so I may just leave it alone for now.

UPDATE: Have just succeded in rolling back to previous bios
