Just thought I'd comment on my upgrade experience ...
Coming from a Q6600 at 3.8 GHz I was a bit sceptical as to benefit and increased power consumption but I am pleasantly surprised! My VMs definitely feel faster as does the whole system generally for development work and that is probably mostly down to a sense of 'snappiness' ...
With my setup I ran the Q6600 at 3.8GHz and the i7 (same case & cooler) sits nicely @ 4.0 plus the boost when loaded (under P95 it is at 4.2) ... this is with all power saving stuff on ... core temps inder P95 are between 75-80 so that is all good. This is the easiest overclock I ever did as I simply dialled in some settings I got from the net and voila ... 4.0GHz and it has not crashed yet so maybe time to get voltages down a bit ... and optimise the RAM settings!
Power wise:
Q6600 @ 3.8: Idle=155w, P95 = 294
Core i7 @ 4.0: Idle=185w, P95 = 325
I can live with that! Also as it happens, my stalker call of pripyat benchmark went up by about 15% which I was not expecting (surely my GTX 260 is mostly GPU bound ??)
