Just upgraded to Win10 (now big problems ...)

Ok so had been using windows 7 for awhile now. Upgraded to 10 as it says above.

My whole system will seem to hang and will require a hard reset to get it to work again and it keeps happening.

Ive just been web-browsing using chrome or edge. Works ok for a bit then chrome will stop working (its uptodate btw). Edge wont work either; Cant go to the task manager either then nothing works.

Seems to work fine for X amount of time 10-15 mins then nothing.

Really annoying.

any suggestions? upgraded new vid card drivers.

Reset PC.

Upgrades of any version of Windows have always been problematic. Use the Reset PC feature to get a clean install.

Pop quiz.

Is there any heavy hard drive access before this happens, and does the hard drive stop accessing even though the access light on the computer is still lit for the short time and then goes out?

If the answer is yes, then I'm having exactly the same problem (event manager isn't going to be of any use since it'll only show that the system wasn't shut down cleanly) and in all likelihood the only option is going to be to start from scratch with a fresh install of windows 10.

ya its wierd - so far I havnt even gotten to testing it with programs or games just chrome/edge

Ive tried 2 things to see if it helps ... you may want to try em.
I do have a lot of errors in event manager btw ...
load pref and printerinterface and a few others ...

Ive lowered the clock on my cpu; was set at 4.5 put it to 4.3 to see if this helps.

and also this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083595

let me know how you get on

there are a couple of other current threads on chrome locking up windows 10,
in other one I suggested reducing its priority so you can get a stack trace or 'proc dump'

we did not discuss vid drivers, but the ones windows 10 clean installed for me
were bad (no hdmi sound, not chrome related) so I re-installed 7 ones which seem ok.
[although I now disabled win 10 automatic driver updates, and cannot do this selectively, am concerned this is another win 10 liability, like patches - keep your hands off my machine MS ]

In FF have previously disabled graphics hardware acceleration for similar problem i do not know if you can do same for chrome ?

man keep getting crashes - keep trying various fixes on computer that I find online under the event manager problems.

hmmm not sure if its chrome crashing it or not have to check this

With me it's pretty much running anything that will trigger it as I've had two while using firefox (after the laptop has been on for at least two hours), another two while trying to defrag the hard drive using auslogics disc defrag where both times it barely got started on the defrag part of the process before the OS threw a hissy fit and stopped working but I can't even remember what I was doing the first time it shoved one end inside the other and locked up but it did want to do a disc check when I started it back up as it supposedly found a controller error, and the most recent had a disastrous effect on firefox as it damaged the cookie file causing everything to be removed (at least there was a backup which I'm likely to be making a copy of just in case).

I think the only thing that's going to fix this is a complete wipe and reinstall of windows 10, but I've already given up on this pile of garbage and I'm thinking of just getting a cheap second hand or reconditioned desktop computer and moving everything that can be moved onto that so that the laptop can become a test system.

I 'may' have fixed it ...
Ive done so many things recently its hard to say. Spent 10 hours yesterday and 2 hours this morning on it (prob would have been better for a fresh install ...)

- Uninstall acronis true image if you have that.
- I also did " disabled runtime broker, disabled readyboostservice,"

Im leaning more toward the acronis but it was perhaps the other 2 there - Ive also done many other things but always got the unresponsive system. So far its been ok.

Ive tried many things with registry edits and windows (forgot what); all new drivers of everything (used driver checking programs); new vid card, sound etc ... declocked cpu ... took out my gpu tweak. <<< None of this worked

computer still working ... although still get a lot of errors and warnings in event viewer; prob should clean install win 10 at some point. Just dont feel like it now.

Clean install is probably your best bet, btw you have the same motherboard I've.

I've mine overclocked on Win10 (4.4GHz) with no issues. Driver wise I download mine from Intel/Nvidia/AMD website, since they are much newer then the Asus ones.

I've both of mine running great :) .

I would do a memory check test on your ram just to rule out any faulty ram issues(never know when ram goes faulty). Also check Reliability History in Control Panel, that normally shows your issues.

ya Ill prob put mine back up to 4.5.

I havnt had the issue since doing those other 3 things and again Im leaning toward the acronis true image causing a problem. Computer has been up and running for about 24 hours now without a crash. Was occuring every 5-20mins before.

But ya prob do a clean install eventually just dont want to bother now :)

See how you go, however probably would have saved you a lot of time if did a clean install in the first place, however you may be fine from now.

Upgrades have always caused havoc for some users and that goes back to Win95 days, Win10 is just another OS like Vista,Win7 etc that has had upgrade issues for some users, the fun of being a PC user :) .

I'm not willing to lose access to the windows 10 apps (which is what the runtime broker is for), so I've decided to keep it simple for the moment and have started with going on a mass switching off of apps allowed to run in the background including photos and groove music and I'll see if that makes any difference, but if it doesn't then it's going straight for a reinstall and will only be used for basic stuff.

what about acronis? did you have that installed? - so far no probs ... although my vlc player doesnt load that well.

I don't have that installed so it most likely wouldn't have been the cause in your case since I managed to get through a session yesterday without it locking up so having too many apps allowed to run in the background might have been the problem to begin with (I'll have to do a few more runs before I call the problem dealt with).

No dice on that as it worked for a few days and then went back to locking up yesterday, so I've disabled the runtime broker to see if that will help but I'm likely going to have to nurse it through the next month if it doesn't until I can get a refurbished computer ordered and delivered along with all the other parts I need to pep it up so that it can replace a majority of what the laptop is doing so I can do a full reinstall (I've got all the general software for the laptop on disc from well before the upgrade to 10) to see if that fixes it and if that doesn't then I'll be breaking out the windows 7 restore discs and taking it back to windows 7.
