Just want some checks on a build

If he used an nvidia GPU that would give him CUDA which would make up for the loss of hyperthreading the i7 gives. No real point going from the i5K to the i7K as an upgrade. The i5K is a great chip and although it lacks hyperthreading the price difference will help him buy a GPU for his gaming habit and as I said if he gets CUDA support the GPU makes a double whammy upgrade :)

Ah ok, thanks for telling me :)

Hi again guys.

I have been giving it much thought, and I am still siding with the 8350.

I am now thinking this setup-

- AMD fx-8350
-Asus M5A78L-M USB3 HDMI Motherboard
-4gb RAM (will add more later)
-Cooler master 500w Elite power 500
- Sony SATA ODD
-Windows 7 64bit HP OEM
-250gb HDD (already owned)

All of this should come out to just under 350 pounds. As said, I will add graphics card later and maybe other things.

I am doing this because it comes to about 80ish pounds under a i5, and this kind of money is pretty crucial as I am budget building.

Just a quick question. I have a old Sapphire HD 3850 which I got off a friend. Even thought it is an old GPU, will it,

A. Be compatible,

and,

B. Be better than the on board graphics of the MoBo?

Of course this GPU would be temporary and if all goes well to start, I shall invest in a better one.

I must sound ignorant to go with the 8350, but I can certainly say that I have taken heed to the professional advice from all that contributed, and I appreciate it considerably. I hope you understand that the price difference is a big factor for me, that is why I am going with the 8350, and that I am not just being a stubborn arse!:D

FX-8350? Futureproof? The i5 is more futureproof, yes the FX-8350 has more cores but when it comes to upgrading - you have nowhere to go. It's like a dead-end, whereas the i5 can easily be upgraded to a i7 if necessary.

That could be debatable with the new Steamroller release next year and depending on the usage:

Not if it's an AGP card!!

You really didn't watch that video bud did you? :( I know TTL can waffle a bit but in short bulldozer and piledriver are PANTS!

You need to understand that the i5K offers greater performance and uses less power to achieve this. Factor in that the 8350 you have chosen has a high TDP and the CM elite power (i always laugh at the name) isn't even 80% efficient, what you think you are saving on this bill for parts you are just spending out again on the electric bill over time.

I left the OS off as you can use the developers copy of windows 8 for 3 months for free. You can buy win7 or 8 later on depending on wether you like win 8. The PSU is better, nice long warranty and it's 80% bronze power efficient, personally I'd want that modular corsair i spec'd earlier for a little more. AS the corsair is modular and you are reusing a old case it will be a god send for cable management. I used 4GB of RAM as you asked to keep the price down, the OEM CPU is a little cheaper to help claw back a little cash too as the mobo comes with a heatsink anyway, ok it has a shorter warranty but CPU failure is very very rare.

Yes you are coming off as a fan boy. I can understand brand loyalty, I really like HTC for phones for example. I've heard my friends tell me apple is better (I laugh), that samsung is better (ok thats a argument worth having) but I have always been a HTC man as you like to phrase it. DIfference is that they make good stuff that is competitive to their rivals. Sadly in our case for CPUs AMD currently just isn't competitive, the only thing they have going for them is the Trinity platform which makes for a great budget rig/laptop because of the great IGP.

Just to add something different since it got repetitive...

This isnt far of 350 budget and 2700k will completely destroy 8320.

Hi guys,

Just to report back, I went with the fx-8350 with a asus m5a78l-m/usb3, and a 550w power supply.

I can say now that I am more than happy with it, even with the on board HD 3000 graphics. Lol.

My next problem is finding a graphics card. I have seen a MSI GTX660 Twin Frozr iii 2gb for second hand at 90 pounds.

It is either this, or a 7770 2gb new. Possibly a 7850 2gb.

My problem is the PSU, it is dual rail with 16A on both rails. Is this suitable for either of the three cards?

EDIT: I put this question in the GFX card specific forum, so you don't have to post on this.
