Mate just called and said that his machine is playing up (yep one of 'those' calls !) anyway i'm pretty sure that its his graphics card thats on its last legs, but just wanted to check before i tell him for sure.

he says that he is getting blocking whilst the machine is starting up and in the login screen. he told me that he has been getting this for a few days now, but before it was only just in Windows and not at startup. It as now progressed to getting to the login screen and the monitor loosing signal, he did manage to login once, but soon after lost signal. I asked if his machine is still running and sounding like it would if all was ok and he says that it is.

So, really just wanted the nod that you guys think the same as me and that his card is soon to be dead. his is going to bring it into work tomorrow so i wil check the connections and stuff then, don't have a spare card as wife asked me to sell and get rid of my spares !!!

Thanks for ya help in advance.

right just checked his machine and it boots but with a 'crazed' screen, i gather that it still loads windows, but no chance of seeing if it has or not due to the screen being eligible. Tried re-seating the card etc with no difference.

You guys think the same as me and that its the card. He just wanted me to post and ask the question, just cus its a lot of cash to find it's not that.

thanks

Sounds very much like the card. Have you tried cleaning the contacts ( pci-e slot on the card -or agp whatever it is ) with alcohol? sometimes a film of residue builds up and simply cleaning it off can bring it back to life. It does sounds like the memory on the cord is borked though.

Cleaned everywhere that i could (was a mess:p). Did not have alcohol though. Yeah does not sound good, just a shame that i do not have another card to prove it to him and myself:rolleyes:

Have you reseted both the cpu and the ram as well and taken out all other expansion cards? its best to strip down to bare minimum to get it to boot and see if you can change anything.

Had taken all cards out etc, not cpu as at work and could not spend that long messing around.

What DutchGuy said makes sense though, as before windows starts i would imagine if there are any corruptions then its the card.

Ok well that satisfies my need for checking. Thanks guys.
