Just want to confirm something quick, I recently bought some ram and still waiting for it to arrive. I went to go order another 4GB of the same brand but it's out of stock. I found another 4GB same brand, different model. Same MHz and timings, it is possible to dual channel these, right?

Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 HyperX T1 Memory Kit CL5 2.2V (this is the sold out ram)

and....

Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 HyperX Memory CL5 2.2V

Thanks in advanced and sorry for the newbie question, pretty tired and just want to confirm this incase I do order more!

Basically what you want to do is end up running 8GB of ram in total. With all 4 slots of your motherboard fully populated.

First of all your OS will have to be 64bit to even use the memory. But pretty sure you have that sorted.

This is DDR2 memory, so for your motherboard to run the ram at the speed that it is rated for you will have to over clock the ram. Again I am sure you know this.

It is not as simple to overclock ram when all the memory slots are full. Possible - oh yes. But not easy to get a really high overclock.

Dual channel is when two channels are populated. When you have all four channels populated you will have 2x dual channel running. No idea what the performance hit or gain would be as it has been years since I last played with DDR2 ram. But regardless you will have the extra capacity that you feel you need to have. Not sure what applications will need 8GB or ram but yes it should work.

Hey, Yes my OS is 64bit.

My motherboard can run higher ram so I don't think i'll have to OC it to the 1066MHz, worst case I just have to change the MHz in the bios?

Also thanks for confiriming that it should work!

since i'm on a budget I may just buy another 2GB for the mean time since I wish to purchase other things too, I found the same brand of ram (2GB Stick) same timings, MHz. It doesn't say the ram features supports dual channel, instead it says unbuffered. Will this work ? (Kingston 2gb Ddr2 1066mhz/pc2-8500 Hyperx Memory Cl5)

I do not know what motherboard you will be using, but let us assume it is a Intel chipset, and since DDR2 it will be a 775 chipset. The default memory is 800MHz.

Changing the MHz is overclocking. ;) But you can clock your ram in different ways of course, the most common is to simple increase the FSB of your CPU. That does two things. Increase the core speed of your CPU and increase the frequency of your ram.

Other ways are to change the ram ratio. Different vendors have different ways of doing this. So until you share what kind of motherboard it is you are using not much more I can offer about how to do that.

With respect to your last question.

Dual channel has nothing to do with the ram sticks. It is configuration of the ram sticks in the slots. So you need two sticks in slots 1 & 3 or two sticks in slots 2 & 4. If you are going to use three sticks you will not be in dual channel, simply because you have three sticks of ram present.

Ah I see. Decided not to go with the ram and bought different stuff I actually will need for the mean time. My Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-EP43-UD3L. So changing the ram to 1066MHz in the bios will be fine once I get it? i'm also going to OC my processor, since I got a new heatsink (Arctic freezer pro 7 rev 2.). I guess i'll have to make a new post about OC'n the chip via bios due to i'm new to it ^_^.
