I imagine that the 680 is rather vram bandwidth limited at anything above 1500MHz GPU core. The 7970 should scale much better at extreme GPU clocks because the GPU is the bottleneck.

From what I have seen, the 12.11 drivers level the field clock for clock at normal overclock frequencies and resolutions. The 7970 was always better at extreme resolution, again due to memory bandwidth.

That is exactly it. the 256bit memory bandwith is what holds the 680s back. Bad move from Nvidia IMO.
