You should have just argued that it's not your fault as you were using a manufacturer-provided tool to update the firmware...
It would have been easy to get them to flash the whole firmware in repair mode without paying anything, because it would have been most likely covered under warranty (as long as you don't mention that you knocked out the cable half way through)
