Karma?

Perhaps he should make a big list of all the wrongs he has ever done to people and go around and try and do good for them instead. Thus tipping the Karma balance in his favour?

Sounds to me like the guy saw the burglary in progress and maybe tried to stop him? Or atleast teach him a lesson for doing it.
