Off to Thruxton next Thursday (as a guest). Not been to this karting track before. Any tips? I've been looking at the track map and been cornering blind in my lounge over the last day or two! :D Just wondered if anyone had been and had some tips?

I'll grab some pics of the afternoon

No but you'll come near the bottom of the grid. If you aren't bothered about finishing near the top then go for it :D

If you haven't been karting before then prepare to be amazed at how grippy slicks are

Ahh ha :) sound advice! I've been karting before, plenty of times. I'm on my "karting diet" as we speak. Just wondered what the Thruxton track niches were, if any.

Excellent track! Pretty big so takes a while to remember all the corners. Have you done much karting before? They're a good group of guys down there although sometimes they're a bit over strict with the "no kerbing sign". Really well run place though and the thunderkarts they use are good.

Great track, cant remember any 'niches' but to be honest its karting not the next F1 race so just enjoy it and stop worrying about niches.

If you have your own driving gloves or something that is a glove and will grip a steering wheel take them. The gloves they hand out dont grip the wheel very well I found. Hope you have strong arms too :D

Last corner onto the start finish straight is good, flat out, do no let up. Make sure you get the line right though or the result will be entertaining for those watching.

As for tips, keep the back end in line otherwise the karts there will bog down and take a bit to get going again. Not sure what circuit you're using, I was on the one without the extended bit so after a sharp left hairpin it was flat out through a chicane and onto the back straight. You want good drive out of that hairpin! I could never get the first damn left hand hairpin right which annoyed me.

I went karting for the first time ever this weekend, it was awesome! Am going again the weekend after next.

I was against a load of people who have been karting loads, and some of them had been to practice last weekend:/ Didn't go too bad tho, so much fun from 8bhp.:D

Thought I'd post a wee update.

Got back around 7:30pm Excellent afternoon, 13 of us in the group. We did the superprix which is 8 laps, and 8 lap heat then a 10 lap race. It absolutely threw it down about 10 minutes before we went on the track, and then stopped raining.

I knew to take it careful but, just wow, finding grip was like finding rocking horse poo, litereally non existent. My kart had new tyres on the front too as they stil had the stipes on! Set a 1:12 in the wet and was lined up 3rd.

By the end of the 2nd heat, the track had nearly completely dried out. Came 3rd again here and set a 58s.

The race was great, again, nice warm track. I had the same kart in this race as I did in the wet but the stripes were no longer on the front tyres, they must have vanished pretty quickly in the dry laps. Came 3rd in the final race and set the fastest laptim of 52:9. The quickest lap for that track is 48.9 iirc.

Great day, we'll probably go again soon.

Only karting place I've been too and it was great, depsite the resulting aches and spinning at corners. Exihilirating.

Of all the places I have been karting, Thruxton was by far the best track.

I did get the feeling we 'inconvenienced' the guys who run it by turning up and wanting to actually go karting though.

Sounds like you had a great time!
