I am seriously thinking of upgrading to a retail anti-virus software, after using free software such as AVG and Avast for a few years now I have noticed they just do not pick up infections as good as paid AV. I did a scan with Kaspersky's on-line scanner and it picked up a lot of infections that Avast, Spybot and AVG have not picked up, however the on-line scanner WILL NOT! remove them.

Now I see Kaspersky do a 30 day free trial, my question is if I download this free trial, will it remove any viruses or will it only remove if paid for? also does the free version of Kaspersky (the AOL Branded one) pick up as many viruses as the paid version?

the trial works like the full version for the 30 days, i have used it now for nearly 2 years (version 5 and now 6) i have had no problems at all in that time.

edit... that's system mechanic versions 5 and 6

I#m using the free Avast and have had not problems of viruses either on my own machine or the opther family machines. the trouble is I can't say that this is because the program is any good; it may not have had anything much to deal with. I certainly wouldn't think of buying an AV program unless I started having some serious problems.

Not all infections can be disinfected by scanners... post a Hijackthis log by downloading the program from here http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php and i'll see if you have anything that can be removed manually. :)

Certain tests have confirmed to me that Avast is superior to Kasperspy, AVG is just useless rubbish.

Avast! uses a cut-down version of Kasperskys own engine... it is not superior in any way, shape or form.
