Hi,

Has anyone flown recently with camera equipment with the current restrictions on hand luggage?

My Kata R-103 rucksac is about 1CM to long and just wondering how anal the airports are being?

It's all down to the carrier really, and most of the time they dont really check unless it look obvious, its just a chance really, if its their "policy" then thats it... although there is usually slightly more space in the overhead storage than most allow.

Oh, and current restrictions = nothing... I had to leave my camera bag behind recently and get as much as my stuff in my main luggage, including my mobile :(

I've flown about 36 times this year with a laptop bag bigger then my camera bag. I'm just concerned with these new restrictions.... I'm quite happy to open it and show them it is all padding. My Canon 100-400mm L is not going in the hold.

Are they physically measuring all hang luggage at the moment?

I just bought one of them myself, my initial thoughts are....probably won't go as hand luggage at the moment. I'd be interested to hear either way though.

Ok, I didn't realise what exactly the restrictions were... and now I know the answer is no, you will not get it on... unless that 1cm is compressable (like padding) so you can squeeze it into the box, but really right at the moment I wouldn't take any chances.

I think it would be easier to smuggle a bomb on right at the moment than take normal everyday equipment.

Quoted for truth... Just make sure you pack it in the new smaller and therefore safer carry on size.

I've just returned from malaysia and i carry my camera bag and a pull along laptop bag. Not sure on this but i think camera bags and hand bags aren't part of your hand luggage allowance.

The Kata is a rucksack, I and others have taken many rucksacks with no problems, although I havent used a camera rucksack yet so whats the difference... you are now allowed to take laptops etc onboard.

The size is the problem. The Kata Rucksac is extremly padded and doesn't squash down at all. I guess I will have to see if these restrictions are lifted in time.

When you fly back you aren't under UK restrictions you are under the restrictions of the country you fly from.

I flew out to Barcelona on the day they first brought in the new restrictions and was only allowed on bored with my passport and wallet! My 20D and 3 lenses (including a 100-400 L IS) had to go in the hold. I packed the lenses in their cases and my 20D in a small Lowepro bag I have (Nova?) and wrapped them in bubble wrap. I was orginally going to use my Lowpro Trekker before the restrictions came in. The camera and lenses both arrived perfectly but I did check my insurance before taking the flight :D

As for now, it all depends on what airport you fly from. Some are just doing visual checks on the size, some have boxes you put your bag into to see if it's the correct size.

Personally I would think that if you are only 1cm over the limit you will be fine but I would have a back up plan just in case.

AFAIK, the restrictions are:
13"x19"x8" (LxHxW).

Does anyone think that i could get away with my bag: 17.7"x13.7"x6.2" ?
Or am i gonna have to buy a new one?
