Kaveri refresh APUs

AMD say they should be overclockable potentially up to 5GHZ.

5GHz Kaveri would be very nice, would destroy a FX-4 CPU.

Hell it would destroy the FX-6/FX-8 in almost anything too.

I've been having fun the last few days customizing/bodging a 92mm fan onto the stock am3+ cooler. Certainly looks impressive but will report back after the weekend when I have found out if it actually works :D

Hadn't realised the 7850k had come down so far in price, was stupidly overprices when it came out but has a clear segment where it seems a reasonable purchase now. If the 7870k clocks higher then that's nice, but still hardly the most exciting release :(

I would definitely be interested if they were able to hit 5ghz safely with the gpu enabled as well. (And it not declocking).

I paid $95 (about 60GBP) for my chip, so it would have to be worthwhile to sell that and get the slightly faster version.

EDIT: Wow.. just looked at that Legit Reviews site, and the advert is showing 137 dollars. Impressive pricing off the bat for a change.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to some overclocking results. I expect these to be the APU equivalent of the fx 83XX refresh with higher clocks at lower volts.

AMDMatt: will you be posting up the release slides?

I saw someone posted up some test results, and that in general the 7870k's were actually running with higher VID's, which is odd given they are still meant to be 95W TDP.

It is because TDP is thermal design power at realistic use of normal applications. Yes the clocks went up with the voltages but i expect their idea of how intensive realistic applications is, remains the same, so it stands to reason that the TDP will be the same despite the refresh.

Wouldnt put too much thought into TDP anyway, since its a bit like static pressure of fans, the number is conjured up for spec sheets and marketing. Take a look at the TDP of some of Nvidia and AMD GPUs and then take a look at their actual power use when not being bottlenecked, itl make you chuckle.

Is there a reason the 7870K is mega expensive on OcUK?
Found the same with my 7850K also, was about about £30 more on here, than when I purchased elsewhere... It still seems steep.

750k? Does he already have a discrete GPU? If so, it ain't worth it. (or did you mean 7850K? Even so, if he already has a discrete gpu, it won't be worth it).

yeh but there quite a few differences/improvements between trinity to kaveri so could either get the 7870k or wait for the athlon godavari.

he only has a r7 260x in it atm so debating dropping the gpu anyway to save on power.

He only play lego games, minecraft etc.

I take it they are still using the uvd 4.2 in these apu's if so then it might not be a wise investment for htpc. Whilst it's early days for 4k content, if yu're buying kaveri as a long term potential htpc system, then if this latest kaveri doesn't support hardware h.264 4k, you'll have to decode using CPU core power.

Tonga has uvd5 though for full hardware 4k decode, I expect carrizo will use the same hardware blocks too.

^^^ I have no idea about the UVD.. maybe someone else can answer that?

Seems like the benchmarks for the 7870k that have come out so far seem to have performance WORSE than the apparently slower 7850K chip, which is really odd unless some bizarre throttling is going on or something. I would wait for things to settle to see how things pan out with this one.

I think the reviews I've seen have been rushed out, possibly not using supported BIOS?
Definitely something set-up wrong, when the chip that is clocked higher on CPU and GPU, is losing out.
Pretty shabby.

I cannot seem to find any updated review, or anything suggesting there was something weird going on with the reviews (like throttling they didn't report etc).
