Kayak Mirage VR

Played the demo. Quite enjoyed it but can't see it holding attention for long, especially with only 4 different areas. There are multiple tracks in each area, but still think it would get old fast.

It is very, very pretty. For me it'll probably end up in the same bin as Rush VR, the wingsuit sim. In both games I think there must be a "trick" to the gameplay that I'm not picking up on, which is needed to beat the NPCs. In Rush I can't get past the first course on the second location, and in Kayak I can't even begin to keep up with the NPCs in race mode

Just tried this and must say it looks amazing. The graphics are some of the best ive ever seen.
Play's fine over airlink, every setting on epic and DLSS also activated. Smooth as butter on my 2070 super.
The physics of the game are superb, the motion of the water is beautiful. Ive never been in a kayak before but it feels real.

what's the actual action/movement of rowing like? the youtube vids of the game i've seen all use a a paddle accessory to mount the touch controllers, just wondering if it's decent without them?

i seen on reddit the other day a dev or someone associated with this game say that they may implement a simple fishing mechanic from the kayak in future!

I've only had a couple of goes due to illness. I haven't been able to spend any amount of time on it.
From what I played the controls without a paddle seemed fine. It was fluid using the controller's and it was easy enough to control the kayak and it felt like a real movement. Once I've got over covid I'll be putting some hours into it.

I broke a fishing landing net pole at the weekend so tie wrapped my G2 controllers onto it to try with Kayak Mirage. Wow indeed, so much immersion compared to before, definitely recommend using a stick or pole of some sort and agree graphics best yet seen in VR

I attached my controllers to a barbell and it worked great. Decent workout for the shoulders too. Might try also adding some light weights, seems like a fun way to exercise.

I wouldn't do that if I was you. Weights and VR don't mix. You have no control in VR, you will be overextending all the time because of the unpredictable movement in VR. The best thing that could happen is that you pull a muscle or something nearly straight away and that forces you to stop using them. But, what's most likely to happen is that you feel nothing. Doesn't sound too bad does it? However, it's actually the worst kind of injury. Because what the weights are doing is causing imbalances and strains on nearly everything in the body. These strains and imbalances build up over time until eventually you get nagging pains and aches that don't go away. Especially in the back, shoulders and wrists.

It's not worth it. The risks far outweigh any gains.

I'm just talking about little 1.25kg weights on either side, nothing heavy. I'd just be doing the standard simple paddling motion, can't see much danger of overextending.

There is a workout that uses the paddling motion like you would on a Kayak using a Barbell. However, like all weight bearing exercises, it's done with a controlled pattern of movement with the core engaged at all times. When you are playing a game in VR you won't be using controlled movements, you won't be able to see what you are actually doing and highly unlikely that you will be engaging your core either. I would bet money that, even with the Barbel only, when you are playing the game in VR you are hyper extending because of poor form.

And when you add extra weight on top of that you are only compounding the problem. Yes, even 1.5KG is, and if you are using a 7ft bar, it becomes a lot.

I would strongly suggest that you don't use the barbell or maybe an EZ Curl bar because it's short. Shorter means less risk.

Interesting. I shall take your advice, I pick up enough random injuries as it is.

(quick note I wonder if OP could update title to name the game in the thread, I almost posted a duplicate)..... I Bought and tried the Kayak Mirage VR "game" last night.
In some ways it goes back to the early VR stuff... as a game it is pretty light on content - it has muliplayer races (using ghosts i think rather than "live" multiplayer)

but i have not bothered with that yet. So if you want games then this does not offer much.

But as a tech demo to show what is possible, and possibly to show none gamers what potential VR has, as well as just a place to chill out it is incredible. For me it was £17 well spent, i am more than happy just splashing about and exploring the areas. Visually there is nothing else like it, not quite photo realistic but it is as close as it gets.

I am not sure the paddling is that accurate, though there are 2 modes arcade and simulation.

I put my chiller fan on blowing on me as i played it and it definitely did what it set out to do. it has been a long time since i have been on a holiday you would consider a tropical paradise and will likely be a long time before i go again, but this was a nice reminder of what i am missing. It also is the perfect app to show off my Reverb G2 headset, hiding its main weakness (controller tracking at extremes) but really showing off its high resolution display.
I tried very briefly the storm in ............ Norway i think it is ..... around a lighthouse ..... that seemed good too but i think the limits to the water physics are on show a little. The LED displays held up well - its not really that dark. i havent done a night scene to check, that will be a real test for that.

Next job is to fashion a paddle.

Been trying some games/experiences again lately since upgrading graphics card. This kayak game was brilliant before but now runs absolutely perfect with everything turned to max. Turned the in game music off and I was so there.
VR is all about immersion and if there’s no stutters/slow down, and everything running properly makes all the difference

Has anyone tried this recently? i tried to give it a go last night on my quest pro and it crashed as soon as i put my headset on.

when i load kayak vr, either with open composite openXR or with steam VR it crashes.

if i open it without the headset on it loads on the monitor but as soon as i put the headset on it crashes.

RTX 3090FE with AMD 5800x no overclocks and no issues elsewhere.

i tried verifying my install but it was fine and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

just to update this incase someone else has it...

i used to have openXR toolkit installed but got rid when i replaced my reverbG2 headset with my quest pro HOWEVER i reinstalled it, then uninstalled it again and it now works again, not sure why it happened but either way..........Happy days!
