My brother's computer is having boot problems after it installed these two updates last night (Windows 10). It boots into auto repair and then the diagnosing screen, but then jumps to the recovery options screen (where you can select to restart, reset, safe mode, etc). I have tried safe mode but it can't boot into it, I have tried a system restore but it oddly can't find any restore points (and I manually made one after installing Windows). Resetting doesn't work either as it says there's not enough space (too many Steam games :p). I have tried using the repair option as well but that doesn't work either. Using the sfc scannow option with cmd under recovery says it can't check the system as it's expecting to boot into repair mode, which doesn't work and boot loops back to the recovery options screen.

Checking my PC it has done the same updates as well but it's fine. Only difference is I'm using Pro while he is using Home.

I may just do a clean install but does anyone else have any ideas what else I can try?

Tried those already but as said before Windows just goes back to the auto repair screen after selecting either of those options.

i had some issues with windows update creating random user profile and causing updates not working. basically had to manually delete a couple of profiles and it all gone well after that. but the symptom was different to the one you are describing. My updates would install then reboot and then during boot it says unable to install update and reboot a few times then load windows and say update has failed.

not sure this will help you.

basically the ones with long strings showing in the registry are all corrupt profiles
