Hi all, i have recently noticed a problem with one of my desktop computers, when i purchased the computer it came with windows xp home, earlier this year i decided to try out windows 7, but i now want xp back on it as its not really powerfull enough to run win 7. I put in the recovery disk and loaded it up and everything was fine until i got a kdcom.dll error code 7. Does anyone know how to fix this?

A friend said it might be a problem with the: RAM,DVD Drive or the recovery disk, but i have used the recovery disk many of a time and it still worked and i have tried another dvd drive to see if it was that but i still get this error.

please help :(

Kdcom.dll is the Kernel Debugger HW (I assume this means hardware) Extension which, if this is the case, suggests to me some piece of hardware is malfunctioning or is damaged. Setup won't be able to continue unless you resolve/remove the troublesome component.

Were you experiencing unreliable performance or random shutdowns when you upgraded to 7?

Try removing components such as DIMM's of RAM and swapping with spares if you have any.

thanks for the responce, when i upgraded to win 7, i didn't have any performance issues, only the fact that win 7 was running on older hardware, but after taking aero off of it, it was fine, the only reason i'm wanting to go back to xp, was that i would get better performance out of it. I have tried testing the ram only with memtest and i don't get any errors, the optical drive i had swapped with a different one, still no joy. anyone with any ideas?

How odd. I am still convinced it's a hardware issue - Kdcom is linked to, amongst other things, hal.dll which is the hardware abstraction layer DLL.

You're not overclocking anything are you? If so, drop everything back down to stock values. If not, try another disc and continue removing components.

Hopefully you'll be able to narrow down the issue.

i'm not overclocking anything as is an older pc, the reason i'm trying to get it back working with xp is that the only other useable computer i have got is my laptop and i can't currently afford to get a new desktop or to upgrade, so i'm trying to get it working with minimal parts. Whats weird is that i can install win7 repeatedly without any errors but not xp. The xp disc in question is a manufactors disc and is the only one i have got. could win7 have overwritten something which xp needs?.

cheers
