My install of KDE4 which has been running happily since i installed Hardy suddenly started throwing an error on start up a couple of days ago. I get a crash handler which tells me that the Plasma workspace has crashed and then a black desktop, no wallpaper or taskbar. aMSN starts running and that lets me get to firefox but otherwise kde4 is out of action.

I've got a final paper for a uni course due in during next week so I've avoided doing anything too drastic; i logged back in to a command line and used apt-get to get kde3 up and running so that i can get to open office etc.

Has anyone seen a similar issue? I'm pretty sure I've had it up and running a few times since the updates came through on Tuesday so i don't think it's anything to do with them, not least because i get the same error if i boot into the old kernel.

Cheers for any ideas

Russ

Weren't there lots of kde4 updates as well as the new kernel? I installed kde4 on top of kde3 to have a look but have stuck with 3. I think kde4 should still be called a beta tbh. Kubuntu 8.10 is going to be kde4 based and I think I may stick with 8.04 and kde3 as 4 still seems incomplete, has little to offer and I suspect will be seriously buggy for a long time yet. I am even considering moving to gnome despite being a long time kde user and advocate.

just for info incase anyone else encounters the same issue.

I deleted the .kde directory and it all works now, of course I'm still having to get it all working like it used to but I'm up and running again.

I agree about the beta thing, I still see kde4 as pretty much a work in progress but it does most of the stuff I need it to do and this is the first major problem I've had with it. I suspect that 4.2 will make a lot of difference
