My CentOS box started not loading Gnome properly, it instead brought up an interface that was near unusable (I think it fell back on running twm).
To resolve the problem, I went down to runlevel 3 and tried to reset the window manager to metacity - this failed with the following error message
X server to shutdown FreeFontPath: FPE "refcount unix/:7100 centos" refcount is 2 should be 1; fixing.
I did a quick search and it told me that it was due to fonts not being installed - I installed the fonts and a similar error message came up (this time something about 'built-in').
As far as I have been able to deduce, the problem is with the ATI drivers. The error out putted reads:
Build Date: 05 January 2010
Build ID: xorg-x11-server 1.1.1-48.67.el5_4.1

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning: Multiple symbols for level 1/group 1 on key <I5F>
> Using XF86Sleep, ignoring XF86Standby
> Warning: Symbol map for key <I5F> redefined
> Using last definition for conflicting fields
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
/root/.xinitrc: line 1: gnome-session: command not found
waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "unix/:7100"
refcount is 2,
should be 1; fixing.
Anyone got any ideas?
