so i went to download manually and it was almost installed and it came up with an error and suggested i run Chkdsk

so i ran chkdsk and managed to catch this print screen just before it closes itself!

a bit worrying as i dont know what any of this means and i still have room on my HDD

any help would be awesome

thanks!

I had this. In the end after talking to microsoft 4 or 5 times trying different things had to insert the media and repair Win install

If I saw that, I'd run the manufacturers hard drive testing tool, if all is well, reformat & reinstall.

If not, replace hard drive

hey guys! the next time i booted my pc after this, it ran a chkdsk on boot so i let it and it said it fixed the problem i think. however now when i try to install the service pack (which i ended up downloading from microsoft manually) it gets quite far then just kind of times out and doesnt finish installing

ill try some of your above suggestions!

Thanks

Could be bad sectors on the hard drive.

Get HDD Regenerator as the trial version will scan hd and check for bad sectors (no repair function though or limited at least)

Sorry for hijacking the thread but i've a related problem. After being in touch with microsoft a good few times about the sp1 installation issues i had to resort to repairing win installation. All was fine up to the last stage: 'Transferring files, settings, and programs' where it got to 68% and has been stuck there for about two hours now. Any idea on what to do now? Don't want to hit reset in the event i corrupt my os but i'm not sure what else to do =/

i dont understand the Transferring files, settings, and program's part are u downloading or installing sp1 with windows update

Neither. Right now i'm repairing windows installation by running the windows upgrade process from my win 7 disc. That was the last thing microsoft have suggested after all the other solutions failed to resolve the service pack installation error.
Having said that, i know it's working - just really, really slowly. Left it running for 6 hours over night and it budged by 4% at this rate i should have my pc back in 2 days =/
