Hi

does anyone know if there is a way to keep google photos in sync so that when you delete a photo from your phone it also deletes it on google photos?

many thanks.
M.

It should just..work. backup and sync does that automatically unless youve used the free up space option to delete photos on the device that are already backed up.

Is sync not working for new photos? Ie, take a photo, delete it and it's still in google photos? If that's the case, try closing google photos on the device, deleting the apps cache and reopening it.

Mine is pretty dicey too at times, sometimes just plain refuses to upload some photos and stuck in sync forever.

As above try reinstalling and clearing cache.

Apologies if you're already doing this but saying just in case, you need to make sure you're using the Google Photos app to delete your 'on device' photos, not your stock gallery app.

And that should work even if the option to delete photos from the device is turned off?

I don't know if this applies to you specifically but there is an ongoing issue that is affecting a small number of folk, me being one of them. For me it started after the December Google Play System Update on my Pixel 4xl.

The only fix that I've found is to uninstall any updates via the Play Store and using the stock photos app. It them syncs perfectly. Update the app and it breaks again.

I've tried a different Google account, a factory reset etc. It works fine after a factory reset as the GPSU is November, then when the phone updates the GPSU to Dec (or Jan now) it breaks.

Obviously it depends on your device, but I've seen a fair few complaining about it on the internet. Hopefully Google will fix it sooner rather than later.

this is an iPhone I am referring to.

I didn't even know you could turn it off. I see you also mention you're on an iPhone so I'm afraid my knowledge is of no use beyond this point :p.
As mentioned above if backup and sync is on then it will delete the photo from Google Photos and "all synced devices". But again as I pointed out you need to do this within Google Photos, not your stock app. If I use my stock OnePlus app to delete all the photo's I've taken with the phone's camera they won't delete from Google Photos or any other device.
Then again that's me talking from Android experience.
