hi

my friend is giving me his gtx 680 .
I don't know weather to use that or keep my 7950 . ive looked on anandtech and the gtx edges it but I run my 7950@1080/1450 and im not sure how far the 680 will overclock . I game @ 1080p so the 2 gig ram shouldn't be too much of a problem .

thoughts please
 
Well there's only one thing you can do , whack it in and give a try, if you dont like it then take it out again.
 
At 1080 res which is what I play, in elder scrolls online on ultra Iv seen 3700mb video memory being used so I'm greatful to have crossfire. I'd sell the Nvidia card and get another 7950. They can be had for 70-80 pound second hand now, and it's liturally just a double performance boost if your wanting more speed cheap. My two 7950s are faster than a single 290x overclocked :)

Memory usage stats are doubled in crossfire so you will only be using 1.85gb of vram. Your crossfire setup only has 3gb usable. Crossfire is only useful in games where crossfire is supported. Trying to play a new release with crossfire is very frustrating.
 
I've switched between a 7950 and an overclocked GTX 670 (near to 680 performance) and the 670 nudged it by about 10% in most games. I don't think you'll notice a great deal of difference between the 7950 and the 680, probably in benchmarking tools but mush less so when gaming.

In summary, the 680 will get you more FPS but possibly only about 10% or so more, depending on how it OCs.
 
need a new psu too which is something ive been wanting to change for a while . mine only has 2 6 pi pci express

Disregarding the fact the 7950 in the benchmarks was run at 800mhz core 1250mhz memory and on older drivers.

Clock the 7950 to 1050/1500 and with modern drivers you have 10-15fps gain from the stock 800mhz quoted.

I'd rather have the 384 bit memory bus and 3gb of ram and try and clock the 7950 to 1100mhz or beyond than swap for a 2gb 680 and try to overclock it.

All good points, agree totally. If I was the OP I'd simply use it as an excuse to do some benchmarking/overclocking/tinkering :D That's the best bit!
 
keep it still beautiful cards and slightly better than the 680 but I'm a little biased :) you should easily be able to get 1050/6000 by overclocking which will pull clear of the 680 anyway, and 3GB VRAM better than 2GB

Get another 7950 for less than a £100 and put yourself right up there with the 980's Ti's and Titans ;)

I might put it in my lads pc . but I must admit I might slap it in my pc and o/clock it to see what it can do . im sure I read some 680s will do 1200 core . is that reasonable or not .
 
I've not had an NVidia card since my gts 640 so im interested in the experiencing the NVidia thingymabob again .
