Starting to have thoughts about swapping the car, but wondering what you guys would do.

Had the car more than a year now (2004 Mondeo Zetec-S TDCI) and not really had any problems with it at all. Its now needing some work on the clutch and I know these engines have a habbit of chewing flywheels and knackering injectors, which could start to get pricey.

I don't need a car that big, although I do like larger cars. I'm getting about 43mpg on average from it and I'm aware figures like that are possible from petrol engines in smaller cars.

Being a good low mileage Zetec-S (quite an appealing model and quite rare), part of me thinks keep it and just get the clutch bearing sorted, but with the price gap between petrol and diesel getting larger another part of me is thinking I should downsize to a focus sized petrol car. Any thoughts?

I had this conundrum with my old 416, the head was going, needed a bit of clutch work etc, in the end I decided to swap it with a model that didn't have any particular known faults, and I've never been happier :)

Look out for an Octy maybe? Some good diesel and petrol lumps, and used prices are pretty low.
