hi

i would like to know is the keepass 2 password generator safe / good to use on all my website accounts and gaming accounts/clients?

Safe as houses. Only problem I find is crappy websites that have a low maximum length allowed or don't accept certain characters. End up having to dumb it down.

I've not signed up for a couple of things recently due to an 8 character maximum limit, not the kind of company I want to trust with my data.

which is better lastpass or Keepass?

LastPass is an easy to use all-in-one solution. It takes care of the database and syncing. KeePass is very much 'do it yourself' when it comes to syncing the database across computers and devices.

Online, that's how it can share between devices if you add the apps etc.

I favour Lastpass but that's purely as I like the android app, otherwise I'd probably have stuck with Keepass. Having said that the Lastpass browser plugins are awesome :)

KeePass puts you in complete control of your passwords. Keep the database on dropbox and then you can access your password database anywhere including mobile devices.

I'd recommend KeePass over LastPass as you don't need to rely on LastPass' servers. Everything for KeePass is 100% open source but I'm not sure about LastPass? Open source is essential for ensuring your data isn't abused.

Use a strong master password.
how strong? how many bits?

problem is i don't want to write down a long password and having to ask someone to get it everytime i want to login to something

i would be using a key file aswell on keepass which adds security.

Quick question - how does LastPass cope with non website logins (like an online game for example), I presume you just cut and paste?

As many as you can manage. I aim for greater than 90.

Key file is useful when it comes to syncing the database. The database is the only file that needs to be synced. For increased security, you could put the key file on a removal USB drive and only insert it when you need access to the database.

Yes. You can double-click the masked password without revealing it and it will be copied to the clipboard.
