keeping a 570 cool with a 2nd card next to it

I have an EVGA 570sc as my main card and my old 9800gtx+ for physx, mainboard is an asus p8p67 so one slot gap between the cards (2 if you include the one the cards cooler blocks). I have taken the 2nd card out and its dropped the main cards idle temp into the low 40's, down from mid 50's. I have a case fan blowing directly into the gap between the cards. Suggestions for ways to have the both cards in without pushing the temps up so much please :) needs to be cool and quiet for when I want to watch films, it got really annoying before. I'm thinking along the lines of a pipe from the front of the case to the cards fan possibly, anyone tried anything like that?

There's only one thing I could see wrong with that solution. One of the reviews mentions noise, and after looking at the operating speeds, it's not hard to see how it could be a problem. It sounds like it will be quite a small fan with it's 'fits anywhere' approach, and small fans and 3,000 RPM, which is likely what you'll need to achieve that sort of temperature drop, just don't mix, especially after you've gone to the effort of getting PWM fans...
 
Thanks for the suggestion Spydell an interesting product I've not come across before, however I fear Tediore has a valid point, the whole point of this is to keep my PC quiet
 
What do you think is the primary cause of the heat issue? The amount of heat the 9800 GTX is pumping into the case, or the GTX 570 not getting enough cool air because of the restricted airflow? Both are going to be contributing factors, but one may be causing more damage than the other.
 
both cards appear to have the same reference heatsink design. I guess the 570 is drawing air over the back of the warm 9800 so if the air going in is already warm its going to have less capacity to remove heat.
 
Pretty much. The 9800 will be denying the 570 access to cool air it would have if the 9800 was removed, coupled with the fact that the restricted amount of air the 570 can take in is also being heated by the 9800.

I'll bring my 460 with me next time. Try that in place of the 9800 and see if a cooler card solves the problem. Then you'll know if it's the restricted airflow from having another card or the amount of heat the 9800 produces that's causing the problem.
 
Cheers for the offer but that gives me an idea - I can just unplug the psu from the 9800, it wont function and get hot then. That leads me onto another thought, why didn't nvidia implement a way of doing just that automatically, these cards really don't need to be burning through so much power on the desktop and especially ones that's not used at all unless I need some physx. I don't suppose anyone has come up with a solution or work around to that by any chance? besides turning the PC off to connect/disconnect the PCIe power cables.

Good point. Didn't think of that :D

I hope more games start using PhysX. It's great. Not only that, but if they don't, my current card will be pointless come upgrade time :mad: :D

It won't give you alarm and refuse to boot? When I unplug the auxiliary power connectors of my 5850 it screams and my rig cannot post.

not on a secondary card i dont think so no, the card will not work at all, so if it was your main one you wouldn't get anything on the screen. I'll try it and report back.

EDIT: Maybe different between AMD and nvidia as well, I don't know not had an AMD for a few years. (They were still ATi when I did :D)
