Keeping content safe from deletion

There's another thread out which was started by somebody where 75gig of his/her stuff was deleted accidently.

I was wondering whether there was a way to ensure that all my data is safe from such circumstances? I have a seperate hard drive with all my stuff e.g. music/pictures/video's etc and I would hate to lose it!

I used to when letting other people go on my machine convert all my files to "read only", but I can't do that now as i've got far too much!

Apart from backing up - are there any other methods?

The trouble is, it is very rarely that other people use my computer, such that I only have one account here and not even a login.

I have looked at "All in one secret maker" but that's not free
