Leaving it plugged in shouldn't harm the battery at all since it fast-charges for the first 75-80% of capacity, then trickle charges (notice how the last bit of the meter takes a while to charge). You can tell how "hard" it's charging by how warm it gets. Once fully charged it will be powering the phone from the dock connector and giving the battery a tiny maintenance trickle every now and then.
