Keeping my laptop cool

I was wondering what would be the best way to keep my Inspiron 1545 cool. I understand I should keep some space between the laptop and whatever it's sitting on, but that's a bit hard when I want to have it in bed with me.

At the moment I've got a binder seperating the laptop from my bed but I doubt it helps much. I've got coretemp installed and I've noticed that whenever it hits 60c the laptop fans kick in and can drop it to about 37c, but once they go off and it's back on the binder the temperature slowly goes back up.

So what would be the best way to actually have the laptop on my lap without covering too many of the vents or making it overheat? I'll probably invest in one of those Akasa coolers from OCUK but I doubt I'd be able to keep those on my lap either.

Suggestions?

what your describing with the fans is normal, most laptops fans don't stay on all the time to save power, I use a notebook cooler base but don't have it plugged in so a book or tray would suffice really. Just ensure it has airflow in and out and it will be fine.

Get one of those tables thingys that have a big beanie cushion on the bottom, It will be like having it sat on a table but will still be comfortable. Temps & when your fan kicks in sound about right but on a decent flat surface the fan won't come on as often, JD.

There's a program called i8kfangui that you could try out - it's a bit complicated but if you just use it's basic functions, you can use it force the fan to run at a specific speed.
