Keeps losing signal?!

I have a wireless ADSL Router (Netgear DG834G v2 - with the firmwire V3.01.25) and a Netgear wireless USB2.0 Adaptor (WG111v2) on my PC.

The router isn't a problem - connected the router to the PC via an ethernet cable and never lost connections. Since I've moved my PC downstairs (about 10m in a linear distance) I had to use the USB adaptor. The signal is strong but it keeps going from very strong and slowly dropping to very low and then no signal. Keeps losing connection within 1 hour.

After I've restarted the PC, it returned back to "strong signal" and drops again.

I've got WEP security set up with the router.

It's rather annoying when downloading and losing connection / speed.
I tried downloading Neo-office through uTorrent and my speed reading is a zig-zac on graphic.

What is going wrong?

Ok, site the router and machine next to each other and see if the same thing happens, if it does it's it's either a signal issue or a software/hardware issue. Do you have anything near by that would cause potential problems eg microwave etc ?

I've got a speaker about a foot away from the USB adaptor. Moved it away, still the same (i think), is the USB adaptor suppose to be so darn hot?

I can't do the test between the router and adaptor at shorter distance because my system is all afixed downstairs (19" CRT etc in a corner desk with wires zipped up) and the router is limited by the length of the RJ11 upstairs. :(

Dr Jones,

Did you ever sort this issue out?

I've got EXACTLY the same issues as you, even down to a very hot dongle (!!!). About the same distance between Router and main PC, signal going from strong to low and then requiring a reboot of PC.

Did you bu another dongle? I was thinking of getting a proper wireless card. Anyone know if that would help?

Just swapped to Sky Broadband, they told me my line would max out at 2.5mbps but on adslguide I'm getting around 4mbps! Result! When the dongle works..........

Glad it's not just me then!

I think that my problem is that I use my main PC for downloading and a wireless connection doesn't seem to be the best for this. Might have to build/buy some sort of dowloading machine for next to the router.

Mine seems to keep dropping low temporarily too. Stangely after having the kitchen changed  . Its pretty useless, my brothers PCI one seems fine though.

good god, wifi is HOPELESS for download, bit torrent especially will kill just about any wifi connection in minutes.

That's nonsense.

My main system for 24/7 downloading using Bittorrent/newsgroups is a laptop and its fantastic.

My connection is maxed out and the wireless never drops out.

However, one of my desktop machines uses a netgear dongle and it's connection drops when the usb dongle gets hot when it's been going for a few hours. Pain in the backside.

PCI/PCMCIA or built in is a hell of a lot better than the dongle's especially the netgear one's which seem to have flaws.
