Kef R400b

Hmmm, most reviews seem to be pretty glowing...?

It's essentially the same design as a B&W PV1, except with larger drivers. Which also gets rated highly?

Check out the SVS PB-2000.

Perhaps I'm being ignorant but that's a ported design, ie a less sophisticated design compared to the sealed opposing driver setup of the Kef?

Also, it's hideous in comparison...!

From what I understand, sealed subs are far more accurate and nuanced, whereas a large ported sub is simply deeper and more impactful?

I should also mention that my room is fairly small, about 11' x 17'.

PV1 is overpriced, more of a lifestyle sub rather those seeking high end performance and don't mind a larger box/larger drivers.

I use a SB Ultra 13 myself.

I doubt I would have got the R series if I didn't want them to look more "lifestyle" :p

That Ultra 13 looks good but at £1.4k it's too expensive.

How much did your Kef R speakers cost? Generally subwoofers cost a fair portion of your speakers.

That PB2000 is a good sub. Read up differences between sealed box and ported. Generally IMO small room for music = sealed box. Large room for movies = ported.

The 2 fronts and center were £1.5k, so anything more than £1k on a sub seems massively excessive personally.

What about a small room for movies / games?!

Oh just seen how big that PB2000 is! That's too large to have in our lounge.

lol my pb2000 lives under the stairs and even at low volume every door and unfixed object in the house moves and rattles. It's too big for normal houses and too loud for terraced and non detached houses. It goes so low you cannot hear it but all the glasses on the other side of the house are tinkling.

Ported designs are more complex than two drivers in a sealed box.

From what I understand, sealed subs are far more accurate and nuanced, whereas a large ported sub is simply deeper and more impactful?

A well designed ported sub would, all other things being equal, probably have lower distortion down towards the subs Fs. `When you go down past Fs, a sealed design would likely be the cleaner of the two thanks to having more control over the cone. Geeenerallly.

Its pretty complex but short answer is no, sealed isn't necessarily better than ported, but they are easier to design and build and generally easier to integrate with existing speakers. thanks to a typically more linear phase response.

if the pb2000 is too big then look at something from bk-elec. They are pretty much the best for the cost.

We sell the KEF r400b and have it in our demo room. Its an excellent sub and works brilliant when placed right.

We normally have it up with the Dali E-12F sub and it seems to give a bit nicer bass response and feel.
