How much should I plan to spend on a Kensington lock for a laptop that won't be so flimsy that a thief can chew through it with their teeth?

Kensington locks aren't worth bothering with. When I was off to Uni a few years ago, I enquired about laptop security methods, and the advise was to get a decent safe. Has served me well to this day.

Kensington locks may put off the impulse thief but they won't stop the determined one (or the curious!) ... we have them at work for our laptops and one of my colleagues can open them with a rolled up bit of stiff card (handy if you've forgotten the key and need to move it).

You guys are really getting me down... :( What I'm after isn't something that'll stop a professional burglar from carrying it out of my flat, but something to keep it safe if I'm in a cafe or library and need to walk away from it for 40" for any reason. If Kensington locks are that easy to pry open, is there any other type that'll keep it securely chained to the desk? Short of hiring a bruiser to guard it of course!:p

The kensingtons are poor basically because the locating port is very weak, usually 1mm plate on the back of the hole, i would think the video port securing cable version is better as it secures via 2 screw fixings this is what some shops use well a similar thing, about £20 from the big forest site. You need to have a VGA port with the screw nuts to use it though.

Video port? What kind of video port, and how exactly does it screw itself onto there? The laptop in question only has a mini-DVI output, so there's no screwholes anywhere near there.

UPDATE: yep, just checked it out on the rainforest site and it looks like a VGA port, so no good for me. Am I limited to only using Kensington locks then? I reckon it's still better than nothing even if it is as bad as you all say tbh...
