Kepler not expected untill 2012

Tesla roadmap, probably not directly indicative of GeForce timetable - infact last I heard the next generation of GeForce GPUs were still on target.

will games progress that much in order to need that much power? as over the years pc games seem to be lacking the edge they had over the consoles years ago :(

Its why in a way I can't wait for the next generation of consoles, not for them themselves, but for the improvements in technology that are hopefully seen which will spill over hopefully into the PC market.

thing is its already there in the pc market just the companys wont spend the time/money catering for sothing that they will not see a good return on as the rato of console to pc gamers are a vast difference

Bingo, the next generation consoles won't bring anything new, it will just mainstream current pc technology.

Yes but putting, well it would be 28nm, say a midrange card which would be close to a top end card now in consoles for a 720p resolution, will push what dev's can do with the available power significantly higher than they can now.

Which will push games forward, and push up requirements for playing at 1080p and above even higher again.

Consoles getting new cards is a very good thing, and the more gpu's push forward, the better the gpu's in consoles will end up.

Of course the real story is that AMD taped out SI early in the year and Nvidia taped out Kepler a good 3-4 months later. If Nvidia get VERY lucky and need less spins than AMD they could close the gap on AMD by 6 weeks or so. The reality is that AMD will launch 3-4 months earlier than Nvidia, again.

Thats hoping Nvidia don't have multiple respins like with fermi.

sig error

Completely off topic, but opeth can you please sort your sig out? It's "were" not "where" - "what were you expecting"

I guess if you were a bit of a chav then "What was you expecting" might be the preferred phrase, although still wrong it sounds slightly better and more literate than the completely wrong "What where you expecting" :p

<sarcasm>

Thank you so much for pointing that out too me!

;)

Just thought I would flip the whole ATI drivers sucks thing on its head, makes it refreshing!

If you throw enough dirt it eventually sticks!

This.
I wont be upgrading from my C2D / GTX280 rig until the next gen consoles are out and even then we're not guaranteed PC gaming will go anywhere..

Argghh, I'm so torn on what to do with my GPU setup just now. Just built a SB rig but kept one of my two GTX 280's for the time being. Can't decide whether to just pay a premium for a 580 just now, then risk Kepler showing up in a few months and wanting one of those, or just sticking it out with the 280 until then. Wish there was more official word on how things are progressing, as there's nothing worse than buying top line hardware only for something newer to be released a couple of weeks later!

I think even the most optimistic where touting november for Nvidia's next gen. Imho, I think sep/oct will be a good time since, we believe AMD are releasing then, and Nvidia's only real reply would be a price war. Timed nicely considering battlefield 3 is out around that time and I doubt Nvidia would want to loose ground.

That's why I'm very tempted to hold on a few more months. Usually the die shrink releases are quite a big performance increase over the previous line of cards as well so should be worth while. Would be a nightmare if I did hold on then release was pushed back to something like Q1 2012. Still itching to try some DX11 games though at the moment!
