Kepler shortage

OcUK's cheapest 7970 had 2 in-stock on Kepler's launch day, and guess how many are left now? - 2. Most other 7970's are 10+, and most types seem to have been in-stock since launch.

7970's do seem to be selling less, i also remember gibbo saying that he had too many 680's to build a pyramid, which makes me think that he had more stock of the 680's vs 7970's which then means they are selling quicker, just my assumption and may be incorrect.

By going through all the posts on the GPU section I would guess the 680 out sold the 7970 by 3:1 at OCUK.Could be totally wrong lol.
Seems to be a lot of people waiting for the 4GB and custom versions of the 680 as well.
Really dreading the price of the 4GB £550-600?
Hopefully when the post release price gouging is over we will see the RRP of £380 for the 680 2GB.

Yeah, all that wasted 28nm silicon sitting on the shelves and not moving anywhere fast:). Saying that, the iPads seem to be selling okay.

Sheesh you are like a broken record :) Its just one shop, it could mean that more people who frequent OcUk would buy Nvidia over AMD, there were a hell of a lot of people saying they were going to wait when 79xx was released.

Also 7970 distribution was a lot more widespread than the GTX680, where Gibbo seemed to get the lions share of the UK stock.

As to availability, it could be that while Nvidia were trying to get the GK110 ready AMD and Apple bought up all the inventory and capacity on 28nm, so when Nvidia realised they couldn't get GK110 out the door and switched to GK104 it was too late and TSMC only had limited capacity left, then they stopped making 28nm altogether for a few weeks.

Hi there

GTX 680 launch, a lot more sucessful than 7970 launch guys. :)

7970 sales are slow, but the OcUK This Week Only offers have got 7970 moving a bit faster, afterall a 7970 from £399 is a good price and we also have 7950 at like £329 on TWO, so good prices.

680 is still selling faster, especially the more expensive big brand cards believe it or not.

Next week like I say we have plenty of Gainward and KFA2 incoming. :)

Gibbo, how come you haven't done you're own review/benchmark/clocking thread on the 680 like you did with 7970 and 7950?............ Or have I missed it?

It's more like, the cheapest card isn't generally the most attractive to the buyer, at all, notice how(last I checked) the cheapest 680gtx, the OCUK branded one was the LAST to sell out, with other cards that were more expensive selling first. Even with no custom cooled cards at all people prefered going for what they perceive as a "big brand" over an OEM card.

With 7970's you're talking about reference vs oem vs pre overclocked vs custom cooled vs overclocked and custom cooled. So with almost no difference in 680gtx the cheapest soldout slower than more expensive ones with a vast difference in cost, cooling and clock speeds the 7970's cheapest card not selling out instantly somehow means the cards aren't selling.......... or more 555BUK talking crap?

As for deciding 10+ in stock means zero sales, more illogical nonsense, the only thing that is proof of, is how much supply AMD were able to establish and fairly quickly as well.

He's also ignoring the fact that other stores got plenty in, sold out, got plenty in, sold out, rinse repeat for the past two months and that little thing called the 7950, which is simply better value, as the 570gtx, 5850, 6950, 8800gt, etc, etc. The top end cards don't sell in huge volume, the top but one cards still aren't huge volume but usually pretty massive vs the top end card. It's both expected, normal and will absolutely happen with the 670gtx, that the top but one part will outsell its big brother many times over.

On Apple, not really sure what they're making at this point on 28nm, if they are making anything. The A5X afaik is still made on 45nm, but people were expecting it to be 28nm.... seems very possible Apple had a 28nm part ready to go but capacity just wasn't there from TSMC to go ahead with it so they launched a not quite great but decent enough 45nm variant of the design. Could they be building up stock of 28nm chips for phones and future tablets, sure, but with TSMC's capacity not increasing that fast they might have gone elsewhere.
