Right, random one but at the moment I'm in temporary accommodation in Basel and this consists of a kettle and a fridge and nothing else. Useless place that I'm paying through the ear for but that's another story.

The food in general is a rip, but also I hate not cooking. So last night I was talking to a mate about all I had and he googled kettle cooking. This was rife for a giggle but came up with people cooking all sorts in a kettle from eggs to pasta to beans etc.

This got me thinking. I have a kettle as my tool, what can I do with it. So tomorrow I'm going to hit the supermarket with the aim of picking up a salmon fillet, some herbs and butter, new potatoes, green beans and a few freezer bags.

My aim?

I'm going to attempt to boil the new potatoes, steam the green beans and mock sous vide the salmon with herbs and butter. All in a kettle.

I will let you know how this goes. Anyone attempted something as ridiculous before?

I always enjoy my Dad's tales of when he and a friend cooked rice in their kettle.

They were getting rice in their tea for a few weeks after. :D

The burner firstly goes against part of the challenge, secondly would probably cost me as much as a bleeding car out here and doubtful I could use it in here. I'm lucky to be able to wipe my **** to be fair. All I get is a kettle.

Apparently the best way to make sure you don't get stuff stuck in the element is to bag anything you put in there. But I think potatoes /may/ be ok as they are normally big enough.

We shall see! I don't think meat would turn out as well, I'd want to brown it somehow and that isn't possible, so fish seems like the best choice!

I tried to boil an egg in a kettle once.

The Egg broke inside the kettle and made a horrible mess all through the damn thing :p

I can see what you trying to do but personally I'd just go out for a nice meal instead less hastle and better food!

Not tried going out for a meal everyday here I assume... I got a takeaway which was one curry and some prawns and it was 25quid. Had a vindaloo last night with rice, samosa and 1 large cobra. 40quid. So I see what you are saying, but every day eating out? No chance.
Besides, this is a challenge and I bet you this tastes spot on.

Could you not buy a microwave? Surely that would befairly cheap and open up a lot of possibilities. Especially if you're out there for quite a while

I have put whole tomatoes in kettles before, for when I am making curries and need to remove the skins......not exactly cooking I know but ...well, lazy I s'pose :)

I maintain that you should be able to cook bacon in a laminator :D

In the kettle I can't see any reason why a steak and kidney pudding, Smash potato, peas and gravy won't work :)

I've cooked bacon on my panini grill. It was actually awesome. Super quick to cook and super crispy.

I also used it for bulgogi beef when I was short on hob space. Worked well for that too :)

Ditched the potatoes in favour of some bread, but did fish (not salmon as that was a rip where I went like £10 for 1 small fillet!!) in butter, lemon and bay leaf with greens and tomatoes.

The result?

Pretty pleased with that outcome.

Going to see what I can do next...

It started as "this is all I have" but now I find it more of a challenge to see how elaborate I can get with just a kettle to cook with.

Electric kettle. Like your normal kettle.

Moses, I'm looking for a flat at the moment, going to see a place today in fact, but since I want something that is nice, and furnished, it seems to be a lot harder to find.

Put anything in a bag, it seems.

You could melt cheese.

Warm bread.

Sauté vegetables with herbs/pepper etc

Boil eggs (5min soft, 10min hard)

Yeah seems legit.
