Is anyone else sharing in my grief at, what appears to be, the final extinguishing of his England career?

I don't like to get too hyperbolic, but I really do shake my head at the management of the ECB. Why continue to rule him out? It's just going to run all summer unless the team performs: heaps pressure on Cook.

Cowardly decision to appoint a guy as director who's far too friendly with the current team to be considered fair and objectionable, and not long ago you've an incoming chairman who says 'clean slate, score some runs and we'll see'. If this is the security that Cook needs as captain then he can't be considered one.

Then again that middle order of Ballance, Bell and Root is pretty well settled.

So the guy is told that if he performs for a county, then he can't be ignored. He goes out and smashes a record-breaking innings, and then gets told under no uncertain terms that he won't play for England again, by the man that called him a **** on air as he's now conveniently the new director of English cricket? It's all highly unprofessional to be honest. As has been said, he's too friendly with loads of players in the team. The country doesn't need friendly director's and players, it needs people that can make the tough decisions. It's just one massive boys club and people that shouldn't even be in the team are still being looked after. This summer is going to be rubbish for English cricket. At the moment English cricket is in an abysmal state and I don't see it getting any better.

Strauss has said he isn't barred from the team, he just wont be considered this summer. No guarantees either way after that.

Biggest issue is "trust" between ECB and KP.

No, biggest issue is "trust" between Strauss and KP. You can be guaranteed that if someone else was director of cricket, that he'd most likely be playing this summer. You'd be absolutely crazy to ignore someone that's set a score like that, but given the history between Strauss and KP, that's what is happening right now.

Neither trust nor Strauss wins test matches , runs and wickets do , and that's all that should matter !!

To turn this into a personal issue Strauss has severely undermined his future if the test team continues to perform poorly.

Nah he's ok, apparently his position is protected for at least the next few years to allow for any settling in. That was apparently stipulated in his contract to allow the position to become useful. So he can do something like call KP a **** live on air, and then to the detriment of English cricket base a decision purely upon his own dislike for KP. English cricket will suffer because of decisions like this. It won't get any better.

Hi Kevin, we don't trust each other, but do you fancy an advisory role within the ODI side?

What?!

Yeah that bit made me laugh. "Hi KP, your current performance has been nothing short of amazing, but I don't trust you so you can't play for your country, but you can be involved as an advisor to the limited overs team". Ok yeah, that works!

The appointment of Strauss as director has been a trainwreck in these few short days since it happened. Anyone looking in could have predicted it. English cricket needs a complete overhaul and appointing someone who is part of the current regime -- and therefore implicitly part of the problem -- is laughable.

KP, like him or not, is the most complete cricketer we've had in our team for a decade. I understand the trust issues, and I'm sure that KP understands why he was frozen out, but rather than working against the man, work *with* him to restore that trust. This smacks of a personal vendetta and think it's going to come back to bite us when we get tonked by the Aussies.

Why does there need to be trust between the director of England cricket and one of the players? Unless you're the captain there's no need for you to be discussing anything with the director.

I'm not sure why people thought Strauss would give KP the nod considering the history. Strauss is too friendly with existing squad members and too personal to just look at this in an objective cricketing view.

It's frustrating that Vaughan had to rule himself out of the role because he was given the clear information that Moores was not going anywhere and then, one test result later, Moores was on his way (good one, again, ECB)

I'm not convinced Vaughan would have got the gig anyway, not part of the same old boys setup as Strauss, but I rather wish he had.

I don't understand how the ECB can employ someone that called an ex-player a **** live on television as the new director of cricket for starters. Then we have the new incoming chairman giving KP a glimmer of hope to return to the England side by publicly declaring that he can't be ignored if he scores runs in county cricket. So he reduces his IPL contract, looks for a county to pick him up, and then goes out and breaks records, and he's now been told that he won't play. It's just bonkers! The new chairman and Strauss are both heading into their run of the ECB under dishonest and farcical circumstances. Is that really the way that we want our cricket to be perceived?

Going by what Michael Vaughan said in his Telegraph column Pietersen wasn't likely to be coming back regardless of who got the job. He said that as well as the Moores issue, the ECB's reluctance to allow Pietersen back was another reason for him pulling out.
