Hi as the title say realy , i did a fresh install of xp on a friends pc all went well then for some reason his @ key did'nt work ( have done quite a few installs but have never come across this before ), i had a look in case i forgot to change to uk layout but thats all fine.
In the end i got him to buy a new keyboard and guess what its the same on that 1 aswell , this has stumped my a bit because the shift key works with every other key it's just the @.
Am i missing something simple here ? , has anyone else come across this problem ?.

Thanks for yor help in advance

Steve

No shift and 2 came up as it should with " and is definitly in uk layout .
He has also tried another old keyboard he had at home and thats the same so 3 boards in total with the same problem.

you happen to plug them into same usb slot? does case have usb slots on front of pc? if it does try the front case usb and see if you get same issue.

As far as i know they were pluged in the same slot , would have thought there would have been more issues if the usb slot was doggy though , cant hurt to try i guess.
Will let you know
Cheers

my dad's pc recently made his keyboard type random letters every now and then, and uninstalled his drivers for his cd drive.

turned out it was one usb port on his motherboard causing all these issues :P quick thing to try for a quick fix.

Spooky. Keyboard possessed. What else can it do? :D

He at first told me he had a virus. i didnt check just believed him. so wiped his computer. reloaded it as he hadnt done fresh install for a while and said he would like it done fresh.

loaded win7 backup OMG its still happening. thought it was just a stuck key, we also found out his cd drive wasnt working as we tried to install win7 via cd he had and that wasnt going anywhere. managed to make bootable usb and use that with install files.

then when loaded check device manager, his cd drive was showing with a caution symbol saying erro with driver. downloaded latest driver installed. still same. wouldnt read anything. went and got my spare cd drive changed it in his sytem. same thing happened. unplugged his keyboard from usb port in back and plugged it in his front port.

everything just started working. pkugged it back into port at back. everything started braking again.

naturally he now keeps it in his front port. told him its a sign to get a new pc.his is 4 years old now
