Keyboard advice needed

Hi everyone,

I've had my Logitech G15 nearly four years now, and although it is in no danger of dying just yet, Ive noticed that the backlighting is not what is was, and some of the keys are getting a little unresponsive.

This is quite a big deal for me, as I have rheumatoid arthritis and I just do not have much strength in my fingers to mash buttons hard. It's for the same reason that I splashed out on a Logitech G700 (I think that's the model) mouse, which is very responsive.

I game, and I also type, sometimes on my laptop (an Acer Aspire 8943G which has lovely sensitive keys)but mostly on my desktop, custom built courtesy of parts from Overclockers of course.

Hence my request for advice on a nice gaming keyboard for the desktop (not that you could get that brute on any desk, LOL, but anyway...)

I am resigned to spending a fair old amount. I like the idea of programmable/macros as this can cut down the wear and tear on the old fingers. I like something that lights up as I play in the dark. I need it to be pretty responsive.

Could fellow members spec me something, across the price ranges?
Thanks in advance!

In terms of responsive keys, I'd say go for a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX red switches. They're very light to the touch, and have a completely linear action, so should be very good on your hands if you have arthritis.

Your need for backlighting and macro keys points me towards recommending the Corsair Vengeance K90. Some of the keys aren't mechanical (the macro keys aren't, if I recall correctly), but the important ones are. The backlight is supposed to be very good, too. Plus, it uses red switches.

It should set you back £90 - 100 or so.

An alternative to that is the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate which is a bit more expensive at £110 - £120. I found it worked well for typing, but not so good for games. It uses blue switches that have an audible and tactile click about half way through the key's travel. I feel the reds would be better for your hands, and a better compromise between gaming/typing use. I use Cherry MX blacks, which are the same as reds, but are a bit heavier sprung. I find them absolutely fine for typing, but I'm quite a big guy, so...

Any good mechanical keyboard sits in this range :)

They're certainly not cheap, but I think you get what you pay for when you consider something like the G19 is the same sort of money. I paid £105 for my SteelSeries 7G, but it was worth every penny. There's no way I could ever go back to typing on a membrane keyboard :)

I paid about £110-120~ for my Razer Blackwidow Ultimate stealth and I've not regretted it. I hate typing code on the keyboards at Uni now. It doesn't help that they have none raised keys.

No problem.

It's all in the FAQ.

Well, I had a mad rush of blood to the credit card and ordered the QPad MK85 as above from OcUK.

Can always pay credit card on payday. I have Thursday and Friday off work (Olympic Torch coming to my area and road closures will make it impossible to get around) so am going to have ample opportunity to test it.

Is going to look absolutely wicked with my HAFX case, I only just realised....
