Hey guys, I've owned two logitech iluminated keyboards and both broke stupidly on me and so now I need a new one. I also just found out that this whole time the w, shift and spacebar keys couldn't be pushed together! That must have messed up my gaming this whole time.

What I need:

1- Must be quiet, I make youtube videos with a blue yeti and it will pick up a mechanical keyboard from across the room.

2- Suitable for gaming, macros not essential

3- Must have volume media buttons and I'd like a pause/play button for music. Don't care about other media buttons.

4- It can't be massive like the G10 and G15.

5- Must be nice to type on. The logitech illuminated keyboard was the best keyboard to type on that I had ever had. I very much like shallow flat keyboards.

Thanks guys :)

What sort of budget do you have? I can definitely recommend the new Corsair K70, fantastic keyboard.

Hmm, just read it has to be quiet so maybe not the K70 then :(

My budget is pretty flexible. I'll pay what I need to without it being over the top.

Haha yeah, this is proving to be really hard to find a decent quiet keyboard and I simply can't have a keyboard that is going to be heard through my youtube videos.

probably Filco Majictouch silent version?

They don't come with any media features though do they? Do any mechanical keyboards come with them?

The thing is also that even these "silent" versions seem a lot louder than my dome keyboard and that worries me that the yeti will pick them up. I guess I can always buy it and see.

The browns are named the quietest switch (out of the 4) and you wont want a mechanical if youre recording with a Blue. They pick up everything including vibrations through the table so id avoid mechanicals where possible.

That is what I thought. The blue is currently on order from america. Saved my self £40 instead so I'm wondering if perhaps I should get a different mic instead and cancel my order or just sell it on ebay where I'd probably break even. Though it seems like a lot of gaming youtubers use the blue yeti so I figured I'd be able to get away without it picking up the keyboard. Might get a boom stand. My 480gtx could be a problem.

Pop filter might help. Best bet is to find someone on YouTube who games on PC and commentates. Ask them what they use. If they use Blue snowballs or Yeti then youve struck gold.
Im 100% getting a mechanical keyboard but I have no idea what mic to get because of this.
My subs are complaining about my crappy Logitech mic! :P

Well I just found a guy who made a forum post a few days ago asking how to improve his sound further with his blue yeti and in his recordings you really can't hear his keyboard at all apart from a few very faint sounds when no game sound is present and he's hammering them. http://www.youtube.com/user/jacksepticeye?feature=watch

He put a wooly hat under the stand of his mic and his keyboard. I think I'll just get a boom stand and put it close with a low gain.

I've only had a couple people comment on my mic but recently I did a video where my mic crapped out on my first intro word and I didn't think anything of it because the rest of the video sounds fine but the audience retention shows a horrendous dip at that point.

I'll definitely be getting a pop filter also.

Don't know, I doubt it though. Just realised that I'll probably have to switch out my 480gtx for my spare (unopened) 570 GTX. meant to sell it and bag my self £300 years ago and forgot haha.

I think I'll send him a message and ask about his keyboard.

I owned a Logitech G110 which did a decent job at everything. Media keys as well.
Currently using the standard Dell keyboard and thats doing fine as well.
With domed keyboards, you really cant go wrong.
Is quiet so you can record away.
Mechanicals are where its out though!

I don't think I'll get a mechanical keyboard for another year or so. Looking at them they just don't have the features I've come to love like volume control etc and at the moment they are just experimenting with switch types.

Isn't the G110 massive? The problem is that when I go home after university I have to use a tiny desk :(

Volume control? K70 and K95 have that scroll volume controller which is pretty good.
At least sticking with rubber domes will spare you the trouble from having to find a new mic.
G110 is like any other standard keyboard but it does have a few macros on it. Most important thing in any setup is a good desk!

Hummm, gonna have to look into the mechanical vs yeti situation a bit more but I suspect it just won't be possible. I also checked out the microsoft sidewinder x4 and that looks a little smaller than the G110.

The guy replied

Hello there,
Sadly the Yeti picks up every little sound. My keyboard and fans from my PC come off as very loud when I record and I have to reduce them in Audacity as best I can.

I have a generic keyboard from Acer that came with a ****** desktop a long time ago. I probably could find a more silent one but the Yeti will pick it up regardless. Just depends on the positioning of the mic I guess

Jeez. Looks like its a no go for me. Can't actually think of any pc commentator who uses a mechanical keyboard! Might use the mics of headsets to do recording and hope its good enough.

Apparently total biscuit does but his set up is likely very professional and far out of any realistic budget.

The other option is to use a dynamical mic and, if I'd known more about mics before I placed my order from america, i'd probably have gotten one of them. They don't pick up background noise in the same way because they are more direct like a mic a singer uses.

Never heard of him. Might have to look him up. Might check out dynamic mics. I have a small amount of knowledge when it comes to mics.
Back to the topic though, you can't really go wrong now adapts with keyboard. Not many features that others don't offer.
Read up some reviews for the G110, I'm pretty sure it'll suit you pretty well.
