keyboard not working

We have a PC here & the keyboard has stopped working. We have tried a PS2 & usb keyboard (different USB ports) but nothing. Works in the bios & on the xp startup options but once windows loads, safe mode aswell the keyobard doesn't.

Any ideas?

Check the accessability settings, maybe something weird in there.

Do the keyboard lights work in Windows (Caps lock, etc)?

is it a dell machine?

for some reason if any of our dell machines have been off for a while or are freshly built here at work it takes an age for the usb to spring into life at the logon screen.

But its also the same for the mouse though, does the mouse work ok at logon screen?

Yep its a gx280, the mouse does work fine just the keyboard playing up. Its a non networked PC aswell with some specialist software on so rebuilding it is really a last resort. Have tried the HD in a different PC & same problem.

long shot then, try updating the bios,

our machines here are the newer gx520 gx620 dual core and non dual core machines. just got my hands on the dual cores to try out.

also check in the bios to see if legacy usb is enabled.

no worries, for some stupid reason forgot about updating the BIOS. will give it a go thanks.

edit - doh it appears I can only update bios from with Windows

I get this sometimes with my usb z-board, it's lucky that my wifes account isn't passworded as I go in on her logon and then hot swap the keyboard into another usb port, works a treat an forces windows to reload the drivers.

I know it's not much consilation but if you do manage to navigate into windows, try anabling the guest account with no password so then at least you get into windows.

Just another thought have you passworded the admins account for xp? if not you try the same.

Its a problem at work so has our build & passwords on it. Will tackle it again at work tomorrow.
