Keyboard options

There is a good thread about them here

They are completely different to type on and use to a basic keyboard, they are more responsive, more comfortable to use and the difference in use is actually a 'wow'.

The hardest thing about buying one is deciding on the switch type and what you will mainly use it for. The black switch is really popular for gaming but not so much for typing. I started with blues (which sound like many Legions not just one) and then settled on browns. I would like to try a red set myself, but I think I probably type more than I game (and I work from home on it which is a pleasure in comparison to the **** ones we have at work).

I use a Filco but the same OEM make the new CM keyboards and so they look a real bargain (only have the black switches here presently though).

They are all a bit nosier than a regular keyboard but the blues are the loudest.

While it seems an odd thing to throw money out, its like any peripheral and after you have a good one you wonder why you didn't get one before. After all you spend all day interacting with it.

A lot of them have less lights and macros and all that jazz than some 'gaming keyboards' and you do pay more for those features on a mechanical keyboard but its still worth it in comparison.

Do they make mechanical keyboards which don't sound like a Roman Imperial Legion is arriving on your doorstep?

Either Red or Black switches are quiet and have no noticeable click on the actuation point.

Personally I find Black switches quite hard for typing and long gaming sessions, whereas Reds were perfect for me with light keypresses and no clicking.

Also one of the biggest advantages of a mech board is NKEY rollover which is very nice in games, nothing worse than a key not registering because you have 4 or 5 held down.

whats the all fuss about the mech keyboards? What are the real benefits?

this is a good overview and the best way of saying it is that its one of those 'once you've tried it' things.

would agree entirely with that statement. blacks are a bit weird for touch typing but imho, great for gaming on. Reds for me are the best compromise. less actuation force and really soft feeling.

I use the corsair K60 at work and the MK85 at home. both great boards

i had a razer black widow with blue switches which were great to start with but once i tried other switch types, it was clear that reds were far superior.

browns are probably my least favourite as they feel a little spongy for my liking but i guess it is all personal preference.

Are there any mechs at the £60 mark with black or red switches where you have a full keyboard and no funny business with placement or size of keys (like no shortening of backspace or stuff like that).
