keyboard problem

I have a problem with my laptop. It is behaving as though one of the shift keys is stuck down (or something like that). When I try to select something from the desktop screen a single mouse click selects everything (or many things). If I manage to load up something in which I can type, characters appear in capital letters (CAPS lock is not on).

I've tried using an external keyboard and mouse, but the laptop keyboard retains its function so the problem persists.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and whether I might be able to fix it?

Thanks.

Sounds like you've accidentally turned on sticky keys.
Go to control pannel -> accessibility options and make sure all the settings are off. It happens if you hold down shift for too long in certain situations and can be a right pain. I usually end up restarting a couple of times too.

PK!

Thanks for the reply, but no, it isn't the painful sticky keys. Could it be a hardware (i.e. physical keyboard) problem? ANy further thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.
