wasn't sure if to put this into here or hardware. Anyway.

Via a windows keyboard you can hold ALT followed by 0-1-8-9 and it'll bring up the 1/2 (half) symbol. obviously there are others to use but this is just one example.

Can this be done via my Mac?

It's a handy feature to have. I prefer the way OS X does it. There's no need to stop and think "what was that alt code?", you can just plow on with the text and it replaces it for you.
