Can anyone recommend a good quality keyboard with quiet keys.

My wife complains that I keep her up when I'm typing an email at night in our bedroom(!).

Any serious suggestions, sarcasm partially welcome also.

Microsoft Sidewinder X6 gaming keyboard (google it!). Nice quiet keys and variable key backlighing to allow for typing in ze darks!

I like the Logitech Wave keyboard though it can be a little noisy depending on how heavy handed you are while typing, great keyboard though :)

Stoner81.

Get the X4 over the X6.

It's newer, and better - more customisable, softer key press and cheaper :)

Have you even looked at the keyboards? the x4 is the budget version. You can't detatch the numpad an locate it to the left side of the board as a bank of macro keys, which might I add, you can do with the x6. Given it has some nice features like anti-ghosting, but seriously, how often are you going to be pressing more than 4-6 keys simultaniously? the x4 is also made from a cheaper feeling material. I know this as I got to try both of them out last year at a lan party before commiting my purchase.

What budget?

I have just the recommendation but if your budget is out maybe you will lol @ the price :p

Subscribed as I'm sick of the keyboard I am using & it's the 3rd one I've bought/tried/tested & not liked. :(
My budget is under 50 quid & it can't be massive as it has to fit on my pull out draw with my mouse-mat beside it.

I'll measure the length of my keyboard when I go home for lunch, I'll let you know the length without the numpad attached. I'm assuming you can live without the numpad attached?

Clearly not, I just post random crap because I feel like it!

X4 is the better keyboard according to reviews (such as those by CustomPC magazine and Bit-Tech - technically the same affiliation I know) agree.

Remind me why the OP will need to detach the numpad and relocate it? Completely unecessary - if you want a bank of macro keys you buy a keyboard like the G15 that has a dedicated set.

Of course it's going to be of cheaper materials - it's a cheaper keyboard, believe it or not!

Read this :p

Conclusion
So, solid build quality, some nice features and even some backlighting for that pro-gamer street cred; the Sidewinder X4 is undoubtedly a big improvement over the muddled, oversized and overly complicated Sidewinder X6. Following two weeks of daily use for both typing and gaming, it’s performed commendably and comfortably.

Well from a personal standpoint, I found that the x6 felt to be the more quality board of the 2. I apologise for appearing to be attacking you in my previous post as I didn't reread it after I had typed. Morning in the Gym and bad nights sleep last night makes Hydro look like a bar stud!

Go into a mac store, you will be able to try out one of their keyboards.

They do work with windows, despite what they might say in the store, their is obviously a small issue with the slightly different layout.

Definitely the quietest keyboard I have ever used.

This. They do a wireless keyboard which should be small enough for your needs (it's like a laptop keyboard and doesn't have the separate numeric keypad) they are going for £50 - £60 online.

I recently got the x4 after spending an age trying to decide on a new keyboard, basically only becasue it can be got so cheap, thinking I'll keep my eye open (and a few days later OCUK decided to stock the 6gv2). I was definatly plesently surprised with it, and have decided to just stick with it. I think you'll be hard pushed to find an equal keybaord at the £30~ mark.

If you're looking for a mac style keyboard, search "Emprex" keyboards in a certain rainforest. Quite a few people suggest them, I tried one out the other day when I realised a colleague in work had one. Very quiet indeed.

Edit: Cristian, how is that keyboard for gaming? I've been looking for a simple keyboard like that.
