As i understand keyless entry specifically on the Lexus IS... if you are 26ft from your car, anyone can open your car and drive it away, and in fact drive it until it runs out of fuel ie, 400 miles away, without the key?

If I were to buy a car with keyless entry would it be stupid? I keep my keys in my house about 15 feet from where I park my car, does this mean I would have 0 security?

Is there a way to turn off keyless entry and just use it like a normal key?

Where the heck did you get a range of 26 feet from? That the range for the button press on the fob not keyless entry. The system will detect the key from a few inches away and will not start without the key being inside the car.

What the actual hell?

The car has to "see" the key inside the cabin before it will start. Even if the key was on the roof of the car, the car would not start. In addition, instead of 26ft. I assume you actually mean 0.26ft

I have keyless entry on my XF - the key needs to be pretty close to allow the doors to unlock, and actually in the car for the engine to start. That said, once started you can get out of the car with the key, and the engine keeps happily running...

There's a difference between unlocking the car (26ft range) and starting the car (usually within a a foot of the transmitter inside the car.

No for keyless entry the range is never that far, if i have the keys in my rucksack it sometimes doesn't detect them so have to turn side on to allow either locking or unlocking.

Why would they implement a system that allows someone's car to sit on their driveway (or even a car park with the range you've suggested there) unlocked and be driven away without needing the key?

Bit of common sense goes a long way.

I was at the Lexus dealership just the other day and the salesman told me I could walk out to the forecourt and get into any of the cars because the keys are stored within 25 feet of the cars. I asked him why so far and he just shrugged...
This is great and all but what stops someone getting into my car when it is parked outside my house?

Now on the owners club some people have said if the engine is running someone else can get in without the key and drive it away and it never shuts down until it runs out of fuel.

The range is pretty decent on my wifes clio for just unlocking the car, the card can be a good 20ft away.

I assume you mean you can unlock it by pressing the button at that range?
I can't think of any RFID solution especially one the size of a keyless entry card that could be picked up at that range, unless it had been specifically designed for it.

The Megane pool car we have has keyless and you have to be next to the thing for the doors to open (you can press the unlock button on the key from farther away) and if I have the key in my pocket and get out to open the boot the car turns off as it's too far away, not sure where the drive until it runs out of fuel comes from that would be stupid.

Which dealership is this, perhaps we should go enmass and 'relieve' them of thier stock:D

My Focus has to have the key pretty much up against the car to allow you to lock/unlock it. And then inside the cabin to allow it to start.

If Lexus' range is 26ft and you don't have to have the key inside the cabin to start it then there's been a major design ****-up.

One hell of a design flaw, but still, I've always known these keyless cars need the key to be with you, or you're not making it far down the road.

Got a mate that owns a mondeo with the keyless stuff, One night he drove to the pub, and his girlfriend took the car home, she pulls away, car stops half down the road....he's still got the key in his pocket :D:D

A while ago when I went up to a-line, some ****** had bought in a keyless Ford S-max and had 4 tyres put on it. The keys were in the office, they showed up and drove the car away from 20ft away, got a few miles before it died on them too.
