Hi,

Recently purchased a GTX970 Infin8 edition through OC but didn't get round to installing it until last week. Not experienced any issues as such with it but downloaded the demo of 3D mark last night and have just run it.

I'm experiencing coil whine but only on certain tests, not all. Has anyone else had this problem with 3D mark, or this card?? Don't seem to be getting bad results otherwise.

I also have some crashes due to a 'kernel error'. Is this drivers or memory??

EVGA P2 1000W

Overkill but got a good deal, shouldn't be any issues there.

The coil whine only happens in 3D mark (so far), the kernel issue happens periodically.

Have contacted OC having read the other threads posted by tommybhoy so will see what they come back with.

You are getting coil whine due to the extreme FPS its pulling on those tests, i take it you don't hear any on Fire Strike?

I did hear a little yes and hovered between 25-40+ FPS but agree, the FPS in Ice Storm for example were pretty daft and when the whine was at its worst.

I have a prolite e2382hsd monitor that might be limiting me in terms of FPS anyway?? Run modded skyrim in 1080 on a constant 60 FPS and very smoothly with no whine so ordinarily don't seem to hear anything.

Psu only plays a very small part IMO. I get cool whine on my gpu. Evga 970. It's a great card. Just get cool whine when I play something that has great fps.

I agree that the PSU will only play a small part in coil whine. In another thread on the subject, I read that quite a few people had what appeared to be decent PSUs, but were advised to upgrade them to cure coil whine. After upgrading to an "approved" PSU, they still experienced coil whine. I'd be quite annoyed if I spent ~£100+ and it didm't cure the problem.

Heard back from OC, they asked me which PSU i was using etc..

I've run more tests and I'm only getting VERY noticeable whine on 3D mark 'Ice Storm' where the FPS go 800 and over. Highly unlikely to happen much in the real world. Ultra and Extreme Firestrike give a little but barely noticeable.

Is whine likely to get worse/degrade? As in, if i leave it will the whine kick in at lower FPS levels?

Had two of these cards in the past and they screamed both in benches and in games, Gibbo even tested them and he agreed that they could be heard across the room.

mental fps will do it to just about any card. if you're hearing it <150fps then that would be when i would consider it to be an issue. Depends how often and how loud it is :)

Described the situation to OC much as i have here and they have still recommended I return it for testing.

Better safe than sorry and brilliant comms from them, streets ahead of the last retailer i had any dealings with.

Just a bit of an update. Hope i'm not speaking too soon..

Posted the card out yesterday to OC for testing and received notification from OC that it had arrived this morning, then barely 30 mins later i had another email notifying me of a replacement being dispatched to me. Can only assume something had been found in testing as the mail specifies replacement and not return.

I've spoken to 3 people (all excellent) via webnote regarding this from start finish, the service and speed has been exemplary and significantly better than a rival i used a few months back, who i wont be using again due to their total lack of service.

Well played OC!

Good to hear, I've got one of these and it whines during normal gameplay where GPU is at 99% in Witcher 3 etc, gonna arrange a return.

This is on a Silent Pro 1000w

Just plugged the new card in. Bit odd really, I'm getting a low buzzing noise during Firestrike which wasn't there with the other one but less pronounced whine during Ice Storm than with the previous card.

Also, Firestrike score (this may also be down to new drivers released 3 days ago) has absolutely shot up from 11300 to 11614!

Very, very slight intermittent buzzing when running Skyrim as well. Given i usually play with headphones on, it's unlikely to bother me. Speakers on would probably cover it too, seeing as PC is on the floor.

Catch 22 i guess, seems a better card but makes a little more noise day to day.
