Ok I'll put this out there

What would you do if you owned a 2003 320D sport auto E46 with 140k that needed two new wings and complete 4x alloy refurb to make it look reasonable again?

This is going to cost in excess of 1K not including the new brakes that are looming that were advised after the last oil service...

Total no brainer, fix the BMW up, it's not a massive cost. That's assuming the alternative is another premium car. The fact that the alternative is a FWD Korean box of dullness/economy/depreciation, why are we even having this conversation?

I wouldn't spend upwards of twenty grand on a Kia.
 
No offence but I'm not sure I understand the thinking/rationale here. Either spend a couple of hundred quid on fixing your current BMW or drop £20k+ on a Kia?. :confused:

Why lease? It almost never makes sense as a private buyer unless you are lucly enough to snag a manufacturer backed deal which is pretty rare.

With a lease you are paying for the depreciation on the car *and* the profit margin for the lease company.
 
Why do you need to buy the wings from BMW? Purchase good condition second hand wings, have them resprayed.

Alternatively check the likes of cotswold bmw for a price for them. Even if you pay £350 for the wings it's still "only" going to be another £200-250 to spray them and £250 for your alloys. Worst case £850, that isn't "in excess of £1k"

Cotswold BMW? Will that be cheaper?

EDIT: Scrap that £340 for 2 x wings at Cotswold and £292 at local

By all means get new wings but equally you could pick two clean ones up for less than 100quid

Should you be keeping the car for say another 5 years then put new on, if not then just use good used wings. They're going to be prepped and repainted anyway - you can't get away from the crap design but they should last more than a couple of years
 
Otherwise good(?) car, requires routine service items (brakes) (around £300?), and would like some cosmetic bits done too, which will cost around £800.

Or, spend 20x that.


Easy decision that......
 
If you are going to spend £20k+ why not spend a bit less ,say between 15-20k and get a year or two old 3 series and just extend the bmw warranty every year with the saving? that way you spend probably less, suffer less depriciation, and will probably end up with a nice car.
 
How expensive is the new civic in the uk? Got mine new for £15,500 1.8 petrol and its been rather nice but i moved from a 17year old disel:p Could be an option for you.

Replace the wings, refurb or find good used replacement wheels, perhaps look into the swirl flaps (is this an issue on an 03 plate?) and get it detailed for that nice fresh look.

I sure as **** wouldn't drop £20k ish on a replacement , Kia or not.

I was going to mention 'if' a good deal is out there but my phone's mobile internet connection decided to not connect for the remainder of my working day. Bad times.

Leasing takes away the hassle of selling it etc and if the monthly cost is similar to the vehicles depreciation (good deal) then it's an option.

Spending nearly £1k to fix a car worth £2k might be annoying, but I guess just bite the bullet and cross your fingers nothing else goes wrong.
