Hi all, I tried asking this in the Apple Software forum a few days ago but I've had no responses yet so I thought I'd try GD.

I've been tasked with setting up an ipod touch for my niece. Initially I just disabled safari, youtube, installing apps etc but now they want web access. I've had a google and there seem to be shedloads of safe browsers (e.g. Mobichip, K9, Metacert) so I was wondering if you had any recommendations for which to go for?

No safe browser will be fully safe. I personally just use a normal browser but monitor what my child is doing. At seven she is only allowed internet access when a parent is present.

I used the KidzUI plugin for firefox some time back for my niece. That seemed pretty good. Some of the games are a bit annoying in that you have to sign up for them but otherwise it didn't trash the laptop.

Chrome has Incognito. That's been pretty safe for me.

(1) Don't give them internet access
(2) Set up a Dans Guardian content filtering proxy (or Privoxy or something)
(3) Use a browser plugin

K9 as its made by bluecoat, who do corporate proxies, so the k9 element is funded by their corporate customers.

Install that, use parental controls to lock out Safari on the iPod. Then you know it's safe without needing to lock out any other wireless they use.

Thanks for the suggestions, I may have a look at that K9 and Net Nanny. I'm afraid OpenDNS is not an option as she'll be using at home (i.e. at my sister's so I've no control over that), school, friends etc.
