Got up this morning thinking it was going to be just another Saturday for me then ...

Dear Mother of God sweet baby Jesus, pain like I have never experienced was inside my left kidney trying to get out and kill me! My partner found me writhing around on the bathroom floor in agony.

Anyway, long story short - quick trip to hospital, seen within 10(!) minutes and thanks to the modern miracle that is prescription drugs, I am now feeling a lot better!

I know there have been a few gall stone posts here, and I've no idea what that pain is like compared to kidney stones, but if it's worse, then I truly feel for you gall stone sufferers!

I've had kidney stones, was in agony for 3 days out of every 10 from February to September a few years back. There is no pain like it and Yes I passed mine out my todger. :(
When I fished the little ******* out the loo it was like a little asteroid with loads of sharp edges, imagine that scraping its way through your wee pipe and that's what I went through for all that time.

Saw it loads in A&E - the hardest men/women reduced to tears with agony, forcing a shard of glass down a narrow straw...now imagine the straw being your ureters and urethra! Wouldn't wish it upon anyone!

I've no idea what my stone is up to right now. Pain has pretty much gone but I don't think I have passed it yet, or if I have it didn't hurt so I'm guessing it's still inside, lurking ...waiting to cause me more agony :(

Yes there were a few posts about gallstones and I was one of the posters.

Mine was gallstones for 7 months then acutely inflamed gallbladder week in hospital in agony.

I have had three or four kidney stones now so our medicine cabinet at home is full of some very powerful pain killers! The last one was blasted with ultrasound, which is quite bearable compared to the pain of the stone.

I've had two stones over the past 6 years and mother of god do they hurt, I take a cranberry tablet every morning and so far haven't had another one, touch wood.... Both of mine came out the man pipe, and looked like little shards of discoloured glass, there are different types I believe! :S

All I can say is god bless ambulance crews and morphine!

I had one around November and it was pretty bad, the one good piece of news is I must have a reasonably high pain threshold as I only gave it an 8/10 on the pain scale and the doctor told me it is one of the 3 most painful conditions you can have. Then again, when they explained the scale "10 is the most painful thing you can imagine" I have quite a vivid imagination :) My dad has had 3 and apparently there's around a 50% chance I'll get another in the next 10 years.

-Woke up around 4am in pain, tried to see if it would go away with no luck so phoned NHS Direct and they were a total waste of space, the girl on the phone sounded about as disinterested as could be and seemed to be asking me all these stupid irrelevant questions off a script. Blatantly she didn't want to be pulling a nightshift.
-Nurse I spoke to on phone after that had a better bedside manner and said to take some painkillers and then contact out of hours GP if the pain didn't go away
-Pain was getting worse and I knew something was wrong as it didn't feel like my usual pains (IBS) so my wife took me into A&E around 05:30, where I promptly vomited, they must have thought I was a ****head originally :)
-Had some morphine and basically lazed around a bit on a saline drip
-Ultrasound in early afternoon revealed the stone had thankfully moved along into my bladder - pain a lot better by that point
-Discharged early evening \o/

One thing that really staggered me was it was virtually impossible to get a drink of water in the hospital, I asked twice but it never turned up, I would have thought with kidney stones they'd be encouraging you to drink not making you try to survive for 12hrs on 500ml (to be fair the drip in the morning would have kept me hydrated but even so I felt really thirsty during the day)! Thankfully my wife brought me a couple of bottles.

Anyway the key differences I found with kidney stone pain compared to other ailments were:

1) The pain felt much more 'inside' me even than say IBS pain
2) It was a constant ache that didn't seem to be noticeably reduced by everyday painkillers

Had one of these, scares me even thinking of feeling that pain again..

Came out of nowhere, white as a sheet ..pain.. couldn't sit still..breathing all over the place. Eventually got to hospital after thinking I was going to die inside and within 10 minutes I'd gone for a pee and the pain went instantly.. just went home and not had another one yet .. about 3 years ago now..

Horrendous pain though and the not knowing what was going on inside of you was just as bad ..

Brother-in-law had a few stones. Absolutely floored him. Three day Hospital visit and a nice $90k fee to pay afterwards. Pretty sure he was regularly drinking mountain dew and lots of cola.

I've had them a couple of times - the last occasion they were going to operate to remove the stone, but luckily it moved before they had a chance. Mind you it took a few weeks before it finally came out when I was peeing.

The worse thing about the pain of a kidney stone is that it's the same kind of intense sick-pain you get from a crack in the nuts. But it just doesn't go away. In fact if I was given the choice of an hourly kick in the nuts or a kidney stone I'd take the kick every time.

My kidney stone never passed and is still sloshing around in my bladder 10 years later. I didn't get given the option of ultra-sound so decided to leave it instead of the doc fishing for it through my japs-eye.
