So I'm supposed to be getting my son a pc for Christmas something that can do games.
I have a budget of around £600

in the cupboard I have a 1055t + mobo + cpu + 8gb ram + psu + os
so he needs pretty much everything and I have no idea where to start with mid/low end stuff

If it makes the budget better I can give him my 7850 and get my self something new.

the above cpu + mobo does not have to be reused unless it's really worth it

What motherboard have you got?

I assume the RAM is DDR3, i'd re-use that, as RAM is slowly getting expensive.

What PSU do you have?

Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H 890GX Socket AM3
psu should be some old antec 650w
corsair 4gb ddr3 1.65v x2

something makes me think even the low end cpu's are pretty much as fast as a x6 1055t is these days?

Please can you specify what you need out of that budget, ie. do you need to include everything, including peripherals, such as mouse, keyboard, speakers and what about a screen and operating system?

He will need everything apart from the OS.

but as said I already have
2x4gb ddr3 1.65v
600 odd what psu
He can have my current 7850 if it helps.
I can also raise the budget to £700 at a push if it makes much difference.

If you reuse the old parts and donate the gpu, then something like this as a base. You would need to choose a case as that is personal preference.

If you wanted cheaper still, another option would be AMD 8320.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £185.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x Toshiba SSD HG5D Series THNSNH 7mm 128GB Solid State Hard Drive - (THNSNH128GCST) £79.99

Total : £434.95 (includes shipping : FREE).

actually haswell does sound good, I have that mobo and cpu in my current pc though.

I'd imagine I would be better going for Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail for the sake of 40quid.

then when I get around to upgrading this pc I can just stick my 4670k in his
